Old School Renaissance – Castles and Crusades – The Rising Knight

Publisher: Troll Lord Games

Introduction

Castles and Crusades is a role-playing game that combines the simplicity and elegance of the classic editions of Dungeons & Dragons with the modern innovations and flexibility of the current editions. The game is published by Troll Lord Games, a company that has been producing quality products for the gaming community since 1999. One of their most popular products is the Castles and Crusades – The Rising Knight module, which is designed as an introductory adventure for new players and Castle Keepers. In this review, I will give you an overview of the module, its contents, its strengths and weaknesses, and my personal opinion on it.

Overview

The Rising Knight is a 20-page module that contains a color cover and black-and-white interior art by Peter Bradley. The module is set in the world of Aihrde, a fantasy setting created by the authors of the game, but it can be easily adapted to any home-brew world. The module consists of four parts: The Town of Botkinburg, The Road to Blacktooth Ridge, The Caves of Chaos, and The Tower of the Rising Knight. Each part contains several encounters, locations, NPCs, and monsters that the player characters can interact with. The module also provides some background information on the world of Aihrde, the history of the Rising Knight, and some suggestions for expanding the adventure.

The adventure begins with the player characters arriving at the town of Botkinburg, where they are hired by a local lord to investigate a mysterious knight who has been terrorizing the nearby villages. The knight, known as the Rising Knight, is rumored to be a powerful warrior who commands a band of orcs and goblins. The player characters must track down the Rising Knight, discover his true identity and motives, and stop his evil plans.

The module is intended to be a simple and straightforward introduction to the Castles and Crusades rules system, which is based on the classic editions of Dungeons & Dragons. The rules are easy to learn and use, and emphasize the role-playing aspect of the game over complex mechanics. The module also showcases some of the unique features of Castles and Crusades, such as the attribute check system, the siege engine mechanic, and the challenge level rating.

The module is suitable for 3-5 player characters of levels 1-2, and can be completed in one or two sessions.
