5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

DESCRIPTION

An abyssal wretch is a twisted and deformed creature that was once a humanoid victim of a rutterkin or a sibriex. These fiends are corrupted by the poison of the Abyss, which transforms their bodies into grotesque shapes and their minds into savage instincts. Abyssal wretches are chaotic evil, and serve as mindless foot soldiers for more powerful demons. They have no memory of their former lives, and only crave violence and destruction.

An abyssal wretch resembles a humanoid with various mutations, such as horns, claws, fangs, scales, spikes, or tentacles. Their skin is mottled with different colors, and their eyes are either glowing or missing. They have no hair, and their mouths are filled with sharp teeth. They are usually naked, or wear tattered rags. They speak no language, but can understand Abyssal. They have darkvision up to 120 feet, and are resistant to cold, fire, and lightning damage. They are immune to poison damage and the charmed, frightened, and poisoned conditions.

COMBAT

An abyssal wretch is a simple and brutal fighter, relying on its bite and claws to attack its enemies. It has no sense of strategy or tactics, and will charge at the nearest foe without regard for its own safety. It will fight to the death, unless ordered to retreat by a more powerful demon. It has no loyalty or compassion, and will not hesitate to turn on its allies if provoked or hungry.

An abyssal wretch has a special ability called Abyssal Corruption. When it bites a humanoid target, it injects a dose of abyssal poison into its bloodstream. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If the target is reduced to 0 hit points while poisoned in this way, it dies and instantly transforms into a living abyssal wretch under the control of the original abyssal wretch’s master. The transformation of the body can be undone only by a wish spell.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

An abyssal wretch is native to the Abyss, the chaotic evil plane of existence that spawns all kinds of demons. It can be found in any layer of the Abyss, but is most common in the Endless Maze, the domain of Baphomet, the Horned King. Baphomet is fond of creating new breeds of abyssal wretches by experimenting with different types of humanoids and animals. He uses them as his army in his endless war against Yeenoghu, the Demon Prince of Gnolls.

An abyssal wretch has no culture or society of its own. It lives in packs or hordes, following the commands of its master or leader. It has no concept of individuality or identity, and does not care about anything other than satisfying its primal urges. It does not form any bonds or relationships with other creatures, except for fear or hatred. It does not worship any deity or power, but will obey any demon that can dominate it.

ECOLOGY

An abyssal wretch is a fiendish creature that feeds on flesh and blood. It has no preference for any type of food, and will eat anything that is alive or dead. It does not need to sleep or rest, but will sometimes enter a state of torpor when there is nothing to do or fight. It does not age or reproduce naturally, but can be created by other means.

An abyssal wretch has no role or purpose in the natural order of things. It is an abomination that disrupts and destroys any environment it enters. It has no allies or enemies among other creatures, except for those that share its alignment or oppose it. It has no value or use for anything other than violence and chaos.

Zardock’s Journal: About the the true purpose of the Abysall Wretches
Entry #32
Date: 27th of Eirmont, 1020 AC
Location:
Somewhere in the Northern Reaches

I have made a terrible discovery. A breach in the Prime Material Plane from the Abyss itself. A portal that allows the foul spawn of chaos and evil to enter our world and wreak havoc. I have seen it with my own eyes, and I fear for the fate of all living things.

It all started when I noticed an increased presence of abyssal wretches in the nearby forest. These twisted and deformed creatures are the result of humanoids being corrupted by the poison of the Abyss. They are mindless and savage, serving as foot soldiers for more powerful demons. I decided to investigate their origin, hoping to find a way to stop their spread.

I followed their tracks to a clearing, where I saw a sight that chilled my blood. A large rift in the air, pulsing with dark energy. A stream of abyssal wretches pouring out of it, like ants from a nest. They were gathering in groups, preparing for something. I sensed a sinister purpose behind their actions. They were not just raiding and killing for fun. They were preparing the field for the coming of more demons.

I hid behind a tree, and cast a spell to observe the rift more closely. I detected a strong aura of chaos and evil, as well as traces of abyssal poison. I realized that the rift was not a natural phenomenon, but a result of the abyssal wretches’ special ability: abyssal corruption. When they bite a humanoid target, they inject a dose of abyssal poison into their bloodstream. The target becomes poisoned, and if they die, they transform into a living abyssal wretch under the control of the original one’s master. But that is not all. The poison also affects the fabric of reality, weakening it and creating cracks that allow the Abyss to seep through. The more abyssal wretches there are, the more breaches they create.

This is a grave threat to our world. If left unchecked, the abyssal wretches will multiply and create more rifts, until the Abyss consumes everything. We must act quickly and decisively, before it is too late. We must find a way to close the rifts, and destroy the abyssal wretches. We must also find out who or what is behind this plot, and stop them at any cost.

I will report my findings to the Council of Mages, and seek their aid and advice. I hope they will listen to me, and not dismiss me as a madman or a liar. I hope they will understand the urgency and gravity of the situation, and not waste time on bureaucracy or politics. I hope they will join me in this fight, and not leave me alone.
