5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

The Ustilagor is a small, brain-like creature that resembles a fungal growth. It has four spindly legs, a pair of ribbon-like tendrils, and a grey or brown coloration. The Ustilagor is blind, but has a keen sense of smell and touch. It can communicate telepathically with other creatures, using emotions such as hate, fear, or loathing. The Ustilagor is mindless and driven by its hunger for thoughts.

COMBAT

The Ustilagor is not a formidable opponent in combat, but it can be dangerous in large numbers or in dark and moist environments. It attacks by striking with its tendrils, which secrete an alkaline fluid that can cause damage and poison its victims. The Ustilagor also uses psionics to induce aversion to fungus in its enemies, or to project negative emotions that can affect their morale and performance. The Ustilagor is vulnerable to fire and radiant damage, which can harm its fungal symbiont.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

The Ustilagor lives underground, either alone or in small pods of up to three individuals. It prefers dark and damp places, such as caves, sewers, or dungeons. It feeds on the thoughts of living creatures, especially those that are intelligent or have strong emotions. The Ustilagor does not form any social bonds with other ustilagors, nor does it have any loyalty or allegiance to any other creature. It is essentially a mindless predator that hunts for food.

ECOLOGY

The Ustilagor is considered a delicacy by the mind flayers of Oryndoll, who raise it for food using intellect devourers as guards. The Ustilagor also serves as a source of psionic energy for the mind flayers, who use it to enhance their own abilities or to create new forms of psionics. The Ustilagor’s fungal symbiont helps it survive in harsh conditions and protects it from some forms of attack by fungal creatures. However, the symbiont also makes the ustilagor susceptible to certain types of magic that can disrupt or destroy it.
