5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite. The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

DESCRIPTION

The Dire Boar is a fearsome beast that resembles a gigantic boar with razor-sharp tusks, coarse fur, and keen eyesight. It can grow up to 12 feet long and weigh over a ton, making it one of the largest and most dangerous animals in the wild. Unlike ordinary boars, which are ill-tempered and generally unfriendly, the Dire Boar is hateful and violent, and will attack any creature that approaches it. The Dire Boar is also known as the Giant Boar or the Elotheres, a name derived from an ancient family of extinct mammals that resembled giant pigs.

COMBAT

The Dire Boar relies on its brute strength and speed to overcome its enemies. It typically tries to charge its opponents and gore them with its tusks, inflicting severe slashing damage and possibly knocking them prone. The Dire Boar is also very resilient and can endure a lot of punishment before succumbing to its wounds. The Dire Boar is not very intelligent, but it has a keen sense of smell and hearing, which helps it locate its prey and avoid danger. The Dire Boar is not easily frightened or intimidated, and will fight to the death unless severely outnumbered or outmatched.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

The Dire Boar prefers to live in temperate forests, hills, plains, and underground areas where it can find plenty of food and shelter. It is an omnivorous creature, but it prefers to feed on flesh, especially that of large herbivores such as deer, elk, or cattle. The Dire Boar travels in groups known as sounders, which usually consist of up to eight individuals. The sounders are led by the largest and strongest boar, which is usually a male. The sounders are territorial and will defend their domain from intruders, especially other sounders or predators.

Some humanoid races have managed to domesticate the Dire Boar, such as orcs, gray orcs, and dwarves. However, this is a difficult and dangerous process, as the Dire Boar remains fierce and unpredictable even after being tamed. Some of these races use the Dire Boar as a mount or a war beast, while others keep them as pets or livestock. The Dire Boar is a favored animal of the orcish deity Bahgtru, who represents physical strength and combat prowess.

ECOLOGY

The Dire Boar plays an important role in the ecology of its habitat, as it helps regulate the population of herbivores and provides food for scavengers and predators. The Dire Boar also contributes to the soil fertility by digging up roots and tubers with its tusks. The Dire Boar has few natural enemies, except for large carnivores such as bears, wolves, lions, or dragons. The Dire Boar is also hunted by some humanoid races for its meat, hide, tusks, or trophies.
