5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

Xvarts are small, blue-skinned humanoids that resemble twisted gnomes. They have large, yellow or orange eyes and often bald or black hair. They wear simple cloth doublets in shades of green and blue. Xvarts are the spawn of Raxivort, a former goblin god who fled his enemies and wandered across the multiverse. Xvarts share a connection with Raxivort, who grants them some of his power and protects his location by making any magic that could reveal him point to the nearest xvart instead . Xvarts occupy a place in humanoid society somewhere between goblins and kobolds, and often act as intermediaries or bullies between these two races.

COMBAT

Xvarts are cowardly and cunning creatures that prefer to attack in large groups and use ambush tactics. They often target sleeping or unsuspecting foes, and sometimes take prisoners to torture or ransom. Xvarts use a variety of weapons, such as short swords, daggers, darts, and nets. They also have some innate abilities, such as being able to disengage as a bonus action, shoving opponents with the help of their allies, and communicating with bats and rats . Some xvarts can also tap into a type of shadow magic that they use to enhance their attacks or defend their lairs. A few xvarts are shamans or witch doctors who serve as leaders or advisors to their tribes . Xvarts will attack a party of humans only if they have a tremendous numerical advantage. Xvarts fear humans, but hate halflings, and will attack them even if the xvarts do not have a tremendous edge in numbers. Xvarts like to fight sleeping or resting opponents, circling them and brutally attacking before their prey knows what has hit them.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

Xvarts usually live in hills or caves, where they form tribes of around 100 members. Each tribe has a leader and several lieutenants who enforce the will of Raxivort. Xvarts have little interest in coins and currency, and often trade goods or services with other creatures. They are generally hateful and spiteful of most other races, especially larger ones, but they sometimes ally with gnomes and halflings who share their low cunning and stealthy nature . Xvarts worship Raxivort as their patron deity, and often perform rituals and sacrifices in his name. They also keep bats and rats as pets or familiars, believing them to be sacred animals of Raxivort . Xvart society is crude by human standards, but effective in keeping the small creatures alive. Xvarts live a communal existences with hunting parties going out daily to try to gather food for the tribe. Xvart females do not fight, but raise the xvart children and keep the xvart community as organized as possible. They also maintain the many traps that have been placed around the camp.

ECOLOGY

Xvarts are omnivorous creatures that eat whatever they can find or steal. They often raid nearby settlements or caravans for food, weapons, or valuables. They also hunt small animals, such as rabbits, squirrels, or birds. Xvarts reproduce twice a year, in spring and autumn, giving birth to twins. Xvart offspring are cared for by the females until they reach the age of seven, when they join the males in hunting and raiding. Xvarts have a lifespan of about 50 years . Xvarts have few natural predators, but they are often hunted by adventurers, soldiers, or other enemies who seek to eliminate their threat or find Raxivort’s location. Xvarts also face competition from other races that inhabit similar environments, such as goblins, kobolds, or orcs.
