Innate Spellcasting. Chourst’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). He can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

Magic Resistance. Chourst has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. Chourst’s weapon attacks are magical.

Randomness Aura. Chourst emits an aura of chaos in a 60-foot radius. Any creature that starts its turn within this aura must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be affected by one of the following effects (Chourst chooses which effect to apply):

  • The creature is blinded until the end of its next turn.
  • The creature is deafened until the end of its next turn.
  • The creature is frightened until the end of its next turn.
  • The creature is poisoned until the end of its next turn.
  • The creature is stunned until the end of its next turn.

Chourst can use a bonus action on each of his turns to end one effect on a creature within his aura.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. Chourst makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its bite.
  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 33 (6d8 + 6) piercing damage plus 11 (2d6 + 4) psychic damage.
  • Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 6) slashing damage plus 11 (2d6 + 4) psychic damage.

LEGENDRAY ACTIONS

Chourst can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Chourst regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

  • Attack. Chourst makes one claw or bite attack.
  • Move. Chourst moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Cast a Spell (Costs 2 Actions). Chourst casts a spell he knows using a spell slot as normal.

LAIR ACTIONS

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Chourst takes a lair action to cause one random effect within his lair that lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round.

The DM chooses which effect to cause.

Some possible effects are:

  • A wall of force appears in a point within range that lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. The wall is up to 60 feet long and up to half as wide as Chourst’s size category. Any creature that starts its turn within this wall must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take bludgeoning damage equal to half its current hit points and be pushed up to half its current speed away from Chourst.
  • A swarm of tiny black dots flies into a point within range that lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. The dots are invisible and harmless, but they fill the area with a cloud of darkness that obscures vision. Any creature that starts its turn in this cloud must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
  • A loud explosion occurs in a point within range that lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. The explosion deals 10d6 fire damage to each creature in a 20-foot radius sphere centered on that point. Any creature that fails its saving throw against this effect is also pushed up to 10 feet away from Chourst.

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

Chourst is a slaad, a frog-like aberration that embodies the chaotic nature of Limbo. He is one of the most unpredictable and whimsical beings in existence, constantly changing his shape, size, and personality. He has no allegiance to any other slaad lord or faction, and often acts on his own whims without regard for the consequences. He is a master of illusion and chaos magic, capable of creating random effects and altering reality to his liking. He is also immune to wild magic surges caused by his presence, as he can control them with ease. Chourst’s appearance varies depending on his mood and whim, but he usually appears as a tall, gangly white slaad with a gemstone embedded in his forehead. His gemstone can be used to identify him by his past deeds and achievements.

COMBAT

Chourst is not interested in fighting unless it is for fun or amusement. He prefers to use his chaos magic to create random situations that challenge his opponents or test their skills. He can cast spells such as confusion, darkness, fear, flame strike, solid fog, and wind walk at will, as well as conjure a symbol of his choice three times each day. He can also use his gemstone to unleash powerful blasts of chaotic energy that can affect multiple targets within range. Chourst’s combat style is unpredictable and erratic, as he can switch between offense and defense, attack and retreat, or even flee from danger at any moment. He is also immune to most forms of damage except those caused by chaos magic or wild magic surges.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

Chourst does not have a fixed habitat or society. He wanders through Limbo and other planes of existence at random intervals, looking for new experiences and sensations. He does not care about the laws or customs of any plane he visits, and often disrupts them with his chaotic actions. He has no friends or allies among other slaads or creatures of chaos, as he considers them boring or predictable. He also has no enemies or rivals among other slaads or creatures of order, as he considers them dull or restrictive. Chourst’s only goal in life is to enjoy himself and spread disorder wherever he goes.

ECOLOGY

Chourst is an ecological anomaly that defies any classification or explanation. He does not follow any natural laws or patterns, but rather creates them with his chaos magic. He does not reproduce sexually like other creatures of chaos, but rather creates new slaads from random combinations of traits and abilities. He does not consume food like other creatures of chaos, but rather feeds on chaos itself. He does not die like other creatures of chaos, but rather ascends to higher planes of existence where he can find more chaos to play with. Chourst is a living embodiment of Limbo’s essence: ever-changing and ever-chaotic.
