Faultless Tracker. The retriever is given a quarry by its master. The quarry can be a specific creature or object the master is personally acquainted with, or it can be a general type of creature or object the master has seen before. The retriever knows the direction and distance to its quarry as long as the two of them are on the same plane of existence. The retriever can have only one such quarry at a time. The retriever also always knows the location of its master.

Innate Spellcasting. The retriever’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 13). The retriever can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components.

  • 3/day each: plane shift (only self and up to one incapacitated creature, which is considered willing for the spell), web

Regeneration (suggested). The retriever regenerates 2 hit points per round unless reduced to zero hit points.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. The retriever makes two foreleg attacks and uses its force or paralyzing beam once, if available.
  • Multiattack (suggested). The retriever makes four oreleg attacks and uses one of its eye rays once.
  • Foreleg. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage.
  • Foreleg (suggested). Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d6 + 6) slashing damage.
  • Eye Rays (suggested). The retriever shoots two of the following magical eye rays choosing one to two targets it can see within range of the eye power:
    • Eye One: 12d6 fireball, with a 5′ blast radius (90 feet range)
    • Eye Two: 12d4 cold ray, one target (90 feet range)
    • Eye Three: 12d6 lightning bolt, 5′ wide and 60 feet long
    • Eye Four: flesh to stone, one target (90 feet range)
  • Force Beam. The retriever targets one creature it can see within 60 feet of it. The target must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (5d10) force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Paralyzing Beam (Recharge 5-6). The retriever targets one creature it can see within 60 feet of it . The target must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The paralyzed target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
If the paralyzed creature is Medium or smaller, the retriever can pick it up as part of the retriever’s move and walk or climb with it at full speed.

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A retriever is a living construct, a creature of nightmare manufactured by the tanar’ri lords to act as their emissaries and enforcers. It resembles a huge spider the size of an elephant, with a black, chitinous exoskeleton and six insectile eyes. The creature’s four rearmost limbs actually carry most of its weight; its front four limbs end in cleaverlike blades that aren’t used for walking. Its head is a metal sphere with four glowing eyes that can shoot beams of different energies. A retriever is programmed to follow the commands of its creator, usually a demon lord or a powerful wizard, and to hunt down specific targets or items across the planes. A retriever can also operate independently, using its own cunning and instincts to find and eliminate its prey.

COMBAT

A retriever is a formidable opponent in combat, using its speed, stealth, and deadly eye rays to subdue its enemies. It can shoot two eye rays per round, choosing from the following options: a paralyzing ray that can immobilize a creature for up to a minute, a force ray that can deal massive damage and knock back a creature, a fear ray that can cause a creature to flee in terror, or a disintegrate ray that can reduce a creature or an object to dust. A retriever can also use its claws to slash at close-range foes, or its bite to inject a venom that can weaken a creature’s physical abilities.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A retriever is usually found in the service of a powerful master who sends it on missions across the planes. A retriever can travel through planar portals or rifts, following the trail of its target with its keen senses. A retriever is loyal to its master, but not mindless. It can make decisions based on the situation and its own survival. A retriever does not care for other creatures, unless they are useful for its mission or pose a threat to it. A retriever does not communicate with words, but can understand Abyssal, Elvish, and Undercommon.

Since retrievers are the living extensions of the will of the Abyssal Lords, they can enter any other plane at will, and have free travel throughout the Abyss. Only the most powerful and daring tanar’ri interfere with a retriever that’s engaged in the pursuit of its duty.

Not every Abyssal Lord has mastered the making of retrievers. It’s thought that Demogorgon was the first tanar’ri to do so, modeling the retriever’s design on the form of the bebilith, or “creeper of the Abyss”. Graz’zt and Pazrael are known to have retrievers in their service too, but it’s impossible to say if they made the creatures themselves or were given retrievers by Demogorgon in exchange for some service or bargain.

ECOLOGY

A retriever is a construct that does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe. It is powered by a magical core that sustains its functions and abilities. A retriever is immune to necrotic, poison, and psychic damage, as well as to most conditions that affect living creatures. A retriever is vulnerable to adamantine weapons, which can bypass its natural armor and damage its metal body. A retriever does not reproduce naturally, but can be created by a complex ritual that involves rare materials and dark magic.

Retrievers are somewhat similar to golems. Their bodies are shaped from the stuff of the Abyss by a powerful tanar’ri lord and imbued with a spirit of evil to animate them. Therefore, retrievers exist outside of nature and neither eat, sleep, nor reproduce. However, spells that affect living creatures (such as charm, sleep, or enfeeblement) affect a retriever normally.
