DESCRIPTION

Ravens are small, black-feathered birds that are found in many regions of the world. They have keen eyesight and a sharp beak that can pierce flesh. Ravens are highly intelligent and can mimic simple sounds they have heard, such as a person whispering, a baby crying, or an animal chittering. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Insight) check. Ravens are often associated with death, darkness, and secrets, and some cultures revere them as messengers of the gods or omens of fate.

COMBAT

Ravens are not aggressive by nature, but they will defend themselves or their nests if threatened. They use their beak to peck at their enemies, inflicting minor wounds. Ravens are also adept at flying and can evade attacks by darting in and out of reach. Ravens can also use their mimicry ability to confuse or distract their foes, or to call for help from other ravens or allies.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

Ravens are social animals that live in flocks of varying sizes. They communicate with each other using a complex system of calls and gestures. Ravens are very curious and adaptable, and can thrive in a variety of environments, from forests to cities. Ravens often scavenge for food, but they also hunt small animals or insects. Ravens have a strong sense of memory and can recognize faces and places. They also have a fondness for shiny objects and will collect them in their nests or hide them in secret places.

ECOLOGY

Ravens play an important role in the ecosystem as scavengers and predators. They help to keep the population of rodents and pests in check, and also clean up carrion and waste. Ravens are also a source of food for larger predators, such as hawks, owls, or wolves. Ravens have a long lifespan and can live up to 20 years in the wild. Ravens have a special connection to the Shadowfell, the plane of darkness and death. Some ravens are servants or spies of the Raven Queen, the mysterious ruler of the Shadowfell who oversees the fate of souls. These ravens can travel between the planes and report what they see to their mistress. Some ravens are also able to shapeshift into humanoids or other forms, such as kenku or wereravens. These ravens often have a hidden agenda or a secret identity, and may seek to influence the events of the world according to their own or their patron’s will.
