Intimidating Prowess. When a carnivorous ape defeats an opponent (0 hit points) or wishes to frighten an intruder, it stands on its hind legs, beats its hands against its chest, and bellows thunderously. The sound of a bellowing ape force all those within 60 feet of the carnivorous ape to make a DC 14 Charisma saving throw or suffer the frightened condition. The target can attempt a new saving throw at the end of its turn.

Rending. If an ape strikes its opponent with both fists in the same round, it inflicts an additional 9 (1d8 +5) points of rending damage.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. The ape makes three attacks, two with its fists and one with its bite.
  • Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d4 + 5) bludgeoning damage.
  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage.

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A carnivorous ape is a large and aggressive beast that resembles a gorilla, but with longer fangs and sharper claws. It has black fur all over its body, except for its face, which is light brown. It stands about 7 feet tall and has a muscular build. It has keen senses of hearing, smell, and sight, and can see well in dim light. It can communicate with other apes using a rudimentary language of grunts and gestures.

COMBAT

A carnivorous ape is a fierce and cunning hunter that prefers to ambush its prey from above or behind. It can move swiftly through the trees, swinging on branches or leaping from one to another. It can also run on all fours on the ground, or stand upright to fight with its arms. It attacks with its powerful fists or by biting with its sharp teeth. If it manages to grab its prey with both hands, it can rend it apart with its claws. A carnivorous ape will often roar or beat its chest to intimidate or challenge its foes.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A carnivorous ape lives in warm forests, hills, or plains, where it can find plenty of food and cover. It lives in family groups of up to twenty members, led by a dominant male. The females outnumber the males two to one, and care for the young. A carnivorous ape is usually loyal to its family, but may fight with other apes for territory or mates. A carnivorous ape may sometimes ally with other creatures that share its habitat, such as hobgoblins or yetis.

ECOLOGY

A carnivorous ape is a carnivore that feeds on meat from various animals, such as deer, boar, or even humans. It may also eat fruits, nuts, or roots occasionally. It hunts during the day, and rests at night in a nest made of leaves and branches. A female carnivorous ape gives birth to one or two infants after a nine-month gestation period. The infants stay with their mother for the first three years of their life, clinging to her fur or riding on her back. A carnivorous ape can live up to 20 years in the wild.
