5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A fire snake is a creature that resembles a snake with a fiery red or orange color. It has scales that glow like embers and eyes that shine like candles. A fire snake is about 5 feet long and weighs about 30 pounds. Some fire snakes are the larval form of salamanders, powerful beings from the Elemental Plane of Fire. Others are simply snakes that have adapted to live in extreme heat.

COMBAT

A fire snake is a fierce and agile predator that attacks with its bite and tail. Its bite delivers a piercing wound and a burst of flame, while its tail delivers a bludgeoning blow and a wave of heat. A fire snake’s body is so hot that any creature that touches it or hits it with a melee attack within 5 feet of it takes fire damage. A fire snake is vulnerable to cold damage, but resistant to nonmagical physical damage and immune to fire damage. A fire snake can understand Ignan, the language of fire, but cannot speak it.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A fire snake lives in places where there is abundant fire, such as volcanoes, lava flows, coal fires, or forges. It prefers to hide in deep pits or crevices where it can ambush its prey. A fire snake is usually solitary, but sometimes forms small groups of up to six members. A fire snake that is the larval form of a salamander will mature into a flamebrother salamander within a year. A fire snake that is not a larval salamander will remain as a fire snake for its entire life. A fire snake is neutral evil in alignment and has no regard for other creatures except as food or enemies.

ECOLOGY

A fire snake feeds on any creature that can provide it with meat and heat. It prefers to hunt warm-blooded animals, such as mammals or birds, but will also eat reptiles, amphibians, or insects if they are available. A fire snake can survive without food for up to a month, but will become more aggressive and restless if it does not eat regularly. A fire snake reproduces by laying eggs that are spheres of smoldering obsidian. The eggs take about six months to hatch, and the hatchlings emerge by melting their way through the shell. A fire snake keeps gems as treasure, as it likes their shiny appearance and their ability to reflect light and heat. Some sages say that fire snakes are larval salamanders. Fire snakes are always found in fires. Some large permanent fires contain up to six of these creatures, though in smaller, temporary fires like fire pits and oil bowls, there may be but one snake.
