CLONE

Necromancy level 8

STANDARD

Casting Time 1 hour
Range Touch
Components V, S, M
Duration Instantaneous

This spell grows an inert duplicate of a living creature as a safeguard against death. This clone forms inside a sealed vessel and grows to full size and maturity after 120 days; you can also choose to have the clone be a younger version of the same creature. It remains inert and endures indefinitely, as long as its vessel remains undisturbed.

At any time after the clone matures, if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone, provided that the soul is free and willing to return.

The clone is physically identical to the original and has the same personality, memories, and abilities, but none of the original’s equipment. The original creature’s physical remains, if they still exist, become inert and can’t thereafter be restored to life, since the creature’s soul is elsewhere.

Components. A diamond worth at least 1,000 gp and at least 1 cubic inch of flesh of the creature that is to be cloned, which the spell consumes, and a vessel worth at least 2,000 gp that has a sealable lid and is large enough to hold a Medium creature, such as a huge urn, coffin, mud-filled cyst in the ground, or crystal container filled with salt water.

SPELL VARIANT #1

Casting Time 1 hour
Range Touch
Components V, S, M
Duration Instantaneous

This spell grows an inert duplicate of a living creature as a safeguard against death. This clone forms inside a sealed vessel and grows to full size and maturity after 60 days; you can also choose to have the clone be a younger version of the same creature. It remains inert and endures indefinitely, as long as its vessel remains undisturbed.

At any time after the clone matures, if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone, provided that the soul is free and willing to return. When the target’s soul transfers to the clone, roll 1d12:

  • 1) Nothing happens
  • 2) The target gains 1d4 hit points (max for class limit applies)
  • 3) The target gains darkvision 60 feet (+30 feet if already has darkvision)
  • 4) The target gains blindsight 30 feet (+10 feet if already has blindsight)
  • 5) The target gains Resistance to necrotic damage
  • 6) The target gains 1 point of strength (max 20)
  • 7) The target gains 1 point of constitution (max 20)
  • 8) The target gains 1 point of dexterity (max 20)
  • 9) The target gains 1 point of intelligence (max 20)
  • 10) The target gains 1 point of wisdom (max 20)
  • 11) The target gains 1 point of charisma (max 20)
  • 12) The target gains +1 AC of natural armor (max +5).

The clone is physically identical to the original and has the same personality, memories, and abilities, but none of the original’s equipment. The original creature’s physical remains, if they still exist, become inert and can’t thereafter be restored to life, since the creature’s soul is elsewhere.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell with a spell slot of 9th level, the clone grows and mature to full size in 30 days and you can add 1 when you roll the d12.

Components. Flask of target’s blood, Ruby worth 5,000 gp, Nine Lives Stealer (requires 1 charge), Sarcophagus worth 20,000 gp (not consumed).
