5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

An Oblex Spawn is a tiny ooze created by mind flayers as a result of their experiments on other slimes and jellies. It is a pale yellow blob with a single red eye and several tentacles that it uses to attack and feed on its prey. An Oblex Spawn has a voracious appetite for memories, which it steals from intelligent creatures by engulfing them with its body. When it does so, it also absorbs some of their personality traits, which it can use to create illusory copies of its victims. These copies help the Oblex Spawn lure more prey and also serve as a defense mechanism against potential threats.

COMBAT

An Oblex Spawn is not very strong or durable, but it is fast and agile. It can squeeze through narrow spaces and avoid attacks that rely on sight or sound. It is also very cunning and deceptive, using its copies to confuse and manipulate its enemies. An Oblex Spawn prefers to ambush its prey, hiding in dark corners or under furniture until it can strike. It then uses its pseudopod to deliver a powerful blow that also inflicts psychic damage and drains the target’s memories. The target becomes memory drained, which impairs its mental faculties and makes it more susceptible to the Oblex Spawn’s influence. The Oblex Spawn can then use its eat memories ability to fully devour the target’s mind, gaining access to its thoughts, feelings, and knowledge. The Oblex Spawn can create up to four copies of any creature whose memories it has eaten, and control them telepathically. The copies look, sound, and act like the original, but are loyal to the Oblex Spawn. The copies can also use any skills or abilities that the original had, but not any spells or magic items. The copies are intangible and can only be harmed by psychic damage or effects that target illusions. The Oblex Spawn can dismiss any copy as a bonus action, or lose control of it if it moves more than 120 feet away from it.

An Oblex Spawn has an aversion to fire, which causes it to panic and flee if it takes fire damage. It also fears bright light, which reveals its true nature and makes its copies less convincing. An Oblex Spawn can be detected by its faint sulfurous smell, or by using magic that reveals illusions or detects thoughts.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

An Oblex Spawn is usually found in the Underdark, where it serves as a minion or a spy for the mind flayers that created it. It can also be encountered in other dark and damp places, such as sewers, dungeons, or swamps, where it hunts for food and hides from predators. An Oblex Spawn is solitary and territorial, avoiding contact with other oozes or creatures unless it needs to feed or defend itself. It does not have any sense of morality or empathy, only hunger and curiosity. It views other creatures as sources of nourishment or amusement, and does not care about the consequences of its actions.

An Oblex Spawn grows larger and more intelligent as it consumes more memories, until it reaches a point where it must shed some of its absorbed personalities or risk going insane. This process creates a new Oblex Spawn, which inherits some of the parent’s memories and traits. The parent and the offspring usually part ways after this event, but sometimes they may form a temporary alliance if they share a common goal or enemy.

ECOLOGY

An Oblex Spawn is an artificial creature that does not have a natural role in the ecosystem. It is an invasive species that disrupts the balance of nature by preying on intelligent creatures and altering their behavior. It also poses a threat to civilization by impersonating influential individuals and spreading chaos and confusion. An Oblex Spawn does not have any natural predators, except for fire-based creatures or those that can see through its illusions. It also competes with other oozes for food and territory, but usually avoids direct confrontation.

An Oblex Spawn does not reproduce sexually, but only by splitting off parts of itself when it becomes too large or unstable. It does not have any gender or age distinctions, but may adopt them from its victims if it suits its purposes. An Oblex Spawn does not have any culture or religion of its own, but may mimic them from its victims if it helps it blend in or manipulate others.
