5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

An ooze mephit is a small, impish creature that originates from the Para-Elemental Plane of Ooze, a realm of mud and slime. It has a humanoid body covered in ochre-colored muck, with dark green eyes and a mischievous grin. Its wings are made of thin, translucent membranes that resemble bubbles, but are surprisingly durable. It can fly and swim with ease, but it also emits a foul odor and leaves a trail of slime wherever it goes.

These unctuous creatures sidle up to strangers and, in purring, sibilant voices, use flattery to ingratiate themselves. “Oooh, what sssplendid armor! You know, you wear that armor with sssuch, sssuch authority, I feel myssself quite overwhelmed.” After a few minutes of this, or as much as the target can stand, the mephit asks for “a loan” of 100 gold pieces.

Ooze mephits are created to clean sewage lines, maintain garbage dumps, and carry out other necessary but unpleasant duties. They quickly desert and become beggars. With the money they beg, ooze mephits hire wizards to transform them into more desirable forms: humans, elves, dwarves, even kobolds.

COMBAT

An ooze mephit prefers to avoid direct combat, but it can use its innate abilities to harass and hinder its enemies. It can breathe a cone of acidic liquid that causes itching and burning sensations on the skin and eyes of those who fail to dodge it. It can also cast acid arrow and stinking cloud spells, using the mud and slime around it as components.

An ooze mephit can regenerate quickly in wet or muddy environments, but it is vulnerable to spells that turn mud into stone, such as transmute mud to rock. It is also immune to fire and water damage, as well as slashing and piercing attacks. It can summon another ooze mephit to aid it once per day, but only if it is in its home plane or near a large source of ooze.

An ooze mephit fights with its claws if cornered, but it usually tries to escape or bargain with its foes. It can speak Common and Aquan, and it may offer information or services in exchange for its freedom or some valuables.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

An ooze mephit lives in the Para-Elemental Plane of Ooze, where it serves the powerful beings that dwell there, such as the evil god Ghaunadaur. It may also be found in the Elemental Plane of Water, or in places where water and earth mix, such as swamps, marshes, bogs, sewers, or garbage dumps.

An ooze mephit is not very sociable with other creatures, except for other mephits of the same type. It is curious and greedy, and often collects shiny or interesting objects that it finds in its travels. It may also try to flatter or trick adventurers into giving it money or gifts, or into taking it to new places. An ooze mephit is loyal to its master, but it may also betray them if it sees a better opportunity elsewhere.

ECOLOGY

An ooze mephit is an outsider that does not need to eat or sleep, but it enjoys indulging in various substances that are slimy or sticky. It may also feed on organic matter that it dissolves with its acid breath or spells. An ooze mephit does not reproduce naturally, but it may be created by powerful magic or by the will of Ghaunadaur. An ooze mephit has a lifespan of about 200 years, but it may be killed by violence or by being trapped in solid rock.

An ooze mephit has a negative impact on the environment, as it pollutes and corrodes everything it touches. It may also spread diseases or parasites with its slime. However, some creatures may benefit from its presence, such as oozes, slimes, molds, fungi, worms, insects, or scavengers that feed on the waste it leaves behind. An ooze mephit may also serve as a source of information or entertainment for those who can tolerate its smell and personality.
