ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. The red slaad makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage.
  • Bite (suggested). Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage.
  • Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. , one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a humanoid, it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be infected with a disease- a minuscule slaad egg. A humanoid host can carry only one slaad egg to term at a time. Over three months, the egg moves to the chest cavity, gestates, and forms a slaad tadpole. In the 24-hour period before giving birth, the host starts to feel unwell, its speed is halved, and it has disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. At birth, the tadpole chews its way through vital organs and out of the host’s chest in 1 round, killing the host in the process. If the disease is cured before the tadpole’s emergence, the unborn slaad is disintegrated.
  • Stunning Croak (suggested, long rest). The red slaadi emits a loud croak. All targets within 20 feet must succeed a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or suffer the stunned condition for 1d3 rounds.

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A Red Slaad is a large, humanoid toad-like creature with a flat head, a muscular body, and a dull red skin. It has huge claws on its hands and feet, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. It can communicate telepathically with other slaadi, and speaks Primordial and Slaad languages. A Red Slaad is a chaotic and violent being, driven by hunger, anger, and the instinct to reproduce. Red slaadi have few forehead tattoos, denoting low status.

Both red and blue slaadi are surly brutes that despise one another, yet their complex reproductive cycle intertwines them as mutual progenitors.

COMBAT

A Red Slaad is a fierce and unpredictable fighter, often leaping into battle and pouncing on as many foes as possible. It can unleash a loud croak that stuns nearby enemies, and then rip them apart with its teeth and claws. It can also summon one or two other Red Slaadi to aid it in combat. A Red Slaad is not very intelligent or coordinated, but it is very strong and resilient. It can resist various types of damage, such as acid, cold, fire, lightning, and thunder.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A Red Slaad originates from the plane of Limbo, where it lives in a state of constant chaos and anarchy. It often wanders alone, or in small gangs or packs, bullying weaker creatures and avoiding stronger ones. It sometimes travels to other planes on missions for its masters, usually to abduct human slaves or cause mayhem. A Red Slaad hates other slaadi of different colors, especially Blue Slaadi, which are its rivals and enemies.

ECOLOGY

A Red Slaad reproduces by injecting an egg into a humanoid host with its claw. The egg grows into a slaad tadpole inside the host, eventually killing it and emerging as a Blue Slaad. A Blue Slaad can then transform into a Red Slaad by consuming the essence of another Red Slaad. This cycle of reproduction creates a constant conflict between the two colors of slaadi, as they compete for hosts and resources.

Red slaadi have a gland under each claw that, when it hits an opponent, may imperceptibly inject an egg-pellet into the opponent’s body. The slaad can also inject the pellet at will into an unconscious opponent. The egg-pellet slowly moves through the unwitting victim’s body until it reaches the chest cavity.

An egg-pellet can be detected by detect evil. Egg or baby slaad can be destroyed by remove curse or similar magic. To prevent this, the slaadi confine victims in temporary prison camps erected near the battlefield.

A Red Slaad is also a voracious carnivore, eating anything that moves or bleeds.
