Asteroid Eater. The astereater can burrow through solid rock at a speed of 20 feet. It can also consume metal and other materials as a form of sustenance. The astereater can bite through adamantine and other metals with ease, ignoring any damage threshold or hardness they may have.

ACTIONS

  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 26 (4d8 + 6) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) acid damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be swallowed by the astereater. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the astereater, and it takes 21 (6d6) acid damage at the start of each of the astereater’s turns. If the astereater takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the astereater must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the astereater. If the astereater dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

The Astereater is a large, spherical creature that resembles a beholder without eye stalks. Its skin is hard and rocky, making it look like an asteroid when its eye and mouth are closed. It has a single, large eye that can see in all directions, and a huge mouth filled with sharp teeth that can bite through metal and stone. The Astereater is a simple and primitive creature, with low intelligence and no magical abilities. It communicates with a few words in its own language, but rarely engages in conversation with anything. It feeds on asteroids and other celestial bodies, using its powerful jaws and acidic stomach to digest them. The Astereater is a solitary and territorial creature, that prefers to hide in asteroid fields and ambush unsuspecting prey.

COMBAT

The Astereater is a formidable opponent in combat, thanks to its tough skin and strong bite. It can burrow through solid rock at a speed of 20 feet, and can ignore any damage threshold or hardness of the materials it consumes. It can also swallow smaller creatures whole, trapping them in its stomach and slowly digesting them. The Astereater can only attack with its bite, and cannot use any other weapons or spells. It is vulnerable to attacks that target its eye or mouth, which are its only weak spots. The Astereater is also slow and clumsy, and can be easily outmaneuvered by faster and smarter foes. The Astereater is not very aggressive, and will only attack if it is hungry or provoked. It will usually retreat if it is wounded or outnumbered, unless it has no other option.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

The Astereater is a space-dwelling creature, that can survive in any environment. It is most commonly found in asteroid fields, where it can blend in with its surroundings and find plenty of food. The Astereater is a loner, and does not associate with other creatures of its kind. It is also very territorial, and will defend its hunting grounds from any intruders. The Astereater has no culture or society, and does not care about anything other than its own survival. It has no allies or enemies, and will treat any other creature as either food or threat. The Astereater is not interested in treasure or magic, and will ignore anything that is not edible or dangerous.

ECOLOGY

The Astereater is a carnivore, that feeds on asteroids and other celestial bodies. It can consume any material, from rock and metal to ice and fire. It can also digest organic matter, such as plants and animals, but it prefers inorganic food. The Astereater has a very efficient metabolism, and can go for long periods of time without eating. It can also store excess food in its stomach, and regurgitate it later if needed. The Astereater has no natural predators, and is only hunted by adventurers or spelljammer crews who seek its valuable skin or teeth. The Astereater has a very low reproductive rate, and only mates once in its lifetime. It lays a single egg, which it buries in an asteroid and leaves to hatch on its own. The Astereater has a very long lifespan, and can live for centuries. The Astereater has no impact on the environment, and does not alter or destroy the places it inhabits.
