5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A rug of smothering is a large, ornate, and seemingly harmless rug that conceals a dark secret. It is actually a living construct, animated by a powerful magic that imbues it with a predatory instinct. A rug of smothering can sense the presence of creatures nearby, and it waits patiently for an opportune moment to strike. When it does, it rises from the floor and wraps itself around its victim, suffocating and crushing them to death. A rug of smothering is indistinguishable from a normal rug when it remains motionless, making it a perfect trap for unsuspecting adventurers.

COMBAT

A rug of smothering prefers to attack creatures that are standing on it or next to it, as it can easily envelop them with its large size. It uses its smother ability to grapple and restrain its target, preventing them from escaping or seeing anything. The target also risks suffocating if they cannot breathe while inside the rug. The rug can only smother one creature at a time, but it can transfer some of the damage it receives to its victim, making it harder to kill. A rug of smothering is vulnerable to magic that can dispel or suppress its animation, such as antimagic field or dispel magic. If affected by such magic, the rug becomes incapacitated or unconscious, and releases its victim.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A rug of smothering is not a natural creature, but a product of arcane experimentation or enchantment. It has no intelligence or personality, only a primal urge to kill. It does not communicate or cooperate with other creatures, even other rugs of smothering. It does not need to eat, drink, or sleep, but it does enjoy the thrill of hunting and killing. A rug of smothering can be found in places where its creator or owner placed it, usually as a guard or a trap. Such places may include dungeons, castles, mansions, temples, or tombs.

ECOLOGY

A rug of smothering has no role in the natural order of things, as it is an artificial being. It does not reproduce or grow, but it can be repaired or modified by magic. It does not have any natural enemies or allies, but it may face opposition from adventurers who seek to destroy it or loot its location. A rug of smothering does not have any valuable parts or materials, but it may be worth something as a curiosity or a trophy. Some mages or collectors may be interested in acquiring a rug of smothering for their own purposes, either as a weapon or a decoration.
