Castles & Crusades A2 Slag Heap is a module for the Castles & Crusades role-playing game, but it can be easily adapted to other fantasy systems. It is a sequel to the previous module, A1 Assault on Blacktooth Ridge, but it can also be played as a standalone adventure. The module involves exploring three villages in the Barren Wood, each with its own secrets and dangers, and eventually confronting the evil that lurks in the Slag Heap, an ancient ruin that once served the Horned God.
What are the most interesting Ecounters
Some of the most interesting encounters in the module are:
- The ghost of the Horned God in the Slag Heap, who can either help or hinder the party depending on their actions and choices. The ghost can also reveal some secrets about the history and purpose of the Slag Heap, as well as the true identity of the main villain.
- The cult of the Horned God in the village of Gull’s Way, who are secretly plotting to resurrect their fallen deity and unleash his wrath upon the world. The party can either infiltrate the cult, expose them, or join them.
- The dragon’s lair in the village of Dragon’s Hollow, where a young green dragon named Vex has taken residence and demands tribute from the villagers. The party can either fight the dragon, negotiate with it, or ally with it against a common enemy.
- The witch’s hut in the village of Witch’s Grove, where a mysterious and powerful witch named Morgana lives and practices her dark arts. The party can either seek her aid, challenge her, or avoid her altogether.
- The final showdown in the Slag Heap, where the party must face the Black Druid, a corrupted servant of the Horned God who seeks to complete his master’s plan and destroy all life. The party must use their wits, skills, and courage to stop him before it is too late.
The Good
- The module is well-written and offers a lot of detail and flavor for the setting and the NPCs. The villages are not just generic places, but have their own history, culture, and problems. The module also provides several hooks and side quests that can expand the adventure or lead to further adventures.
- The Slag Heap itself is a challenging dungeon with interesting traps, puzzles, and enemies. The module also has some twists and surprises that can keep the players on their toes.
- The module is suitable for fans of classic fantasy and old-school gaming, as well as those who want to explore a rich and detailed setting.
The Bad
- Some of the encounters are too easy or too hard for the suggested level range (2-4), and some of the maps are confusing or inconsistent.
- The module relies heavily on the Castles & Crusades system, which may not be familiar to some players or GMs. Some of the rules and mechanics may need to be adjusted or converted to other systems.
- The module assumes a certain degree of familiarity with the setting of Aihrde, which is not very well explained in the module itself.
The Verdict
Overall, Castles & Crusades A2 Slag Heap is a solid and enjoyable adventure that offers a lot of variety and challenge for the players. It is not a perfect module, but it is definitely worth checking out.
