DESCRIPTION
The greater winged cat, also known as jana-nimr or tressym, is a magical beast that resembles a large cat with feathered wings. They come in various colors and patterns, ranging from black, gray, and sandy to striped or spotted. Their wings can span up to 15 feet and have intricate designs on their feathers. They have owl-like faces with tufts of fur on their ears and can see well in the dark. They are intelligent and can communicate with their own language, as well as understand Common and the languages of other feline creatures, such as sphinxes.
COMBAT
Greater winged cats are peaceful by nature, but fierce when hunting or defending themselves. They prefer to attack from the air with their teeth and claws, swooping down on their prey or enemies. They are not easily scared off and will only retreat if severely wounded or outnumbered. They have a keen sense of smell and can detect invisible creatures or objects up to 90 feet away. They are also immune to poison and resistant to magic. They are generally relaxed, but they can be very dangerous if threatened. They may rake with their rear claws if they enter melee combat, provided both front claws hit first. They are also vengeful and will remember any harm done to them for years.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
Greater winged cats can be found in warm and temperate lands, especially in grasslands or hilly regions. They are solitary creatures, except during the mating season when a male will court a female with gifts of food. A typical litter consists of one to three cubs, which stay with their mother for several years. Greater winged cats can live up to 50 years and are loyal to their mates and offspring. They are also curious and friendly towards other creatures, unless they are threatened or harmed. Some greater winged cats can form bonds with humans or other races and serve as companions or mounts. They are considered good luck charms and mascots in some places, such as the village of Eveningstar in Cormyr. They usually make a nest by flattening a small grassy area in their habitat.
ECOLOGY
Greater winged cats are carnivorous and feed on other mammals or birds. They prefer fresh meat, but will scavenge if necessary. They are also known to eat fruits and vegetables occasionally. They have no natural predators, except for dragons or other large flying creatures. They are valued by zookeepers and collectors for their beauty and rarity. Some wizards also seek them out as familiars, as they can share their senses and abilities with them. Greater winged cats are respected and admired by many cultures for their grace and intelligence. They are intelligent enough to generally leave domestic animals alone, unless they are starving. If captured young, a greater winged cat can be trained as a mount, though much patience is needed because of the cat’s great independence. Once loyalty is obtained, it is never lost. A greater winged cat will accept only its trainer as a rider.
