DESCRIPTION

A swarm of insects is a mass of tiny creatures that act as one entity. They can be composed of any kind of flying or crawling insects, such as beetles, centipedes, flies, locusts, spiders, or wasps. A swarm of insects is usually hostile to any creature that disturbs it, and will attack with countless bites and stings. A swarm of insects can move through any opening large enough for a single insect, and can occupy the same space as another creature. A swarm of insects is immune to most conditions that affect individual creatures, such as being charmed, frightened, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, prone, restrained, or stunned. A swarm of insects is also resistant to physical damage from weapons or spells, but vulnerable to fire and area effects that can disperse or destroy many insects at once.

COMBAT

A swarm of insects relies on its sheer numbers and relentless attacks to overwhelm its enemies. It can bite any creature in its space, dealing piercing damage that is reduced if the swarm has lost half or more of its hit points. A swarm of insects can also use its ability to obscure vision and movement to its advantage, creating a distraction or a cover for escape. Some swarms of insects may have additional abilities depending on their type, such as poison, disease, or flight.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A swarm of insects can be found in almost any environment where insects thrive, such as deserts, forests, grasslands, hills, swamps, underdark, or urban areas. A swarm of insects may be natural or unnatural in origin, depending on the circumstances. A natural swarm of insects may form due to environmental factors, such as drought, famine, or pollution, that cause the insects to migrate or multiply rapidly. An unnatural swarm of insects may be created by magic, such as a spell or a magic item that summons or controls insects. A swarm of insects has no society or culture of its own, but may serve as a source of food or a tool for other creatures that can manipulate or communicate with them.

ECOLOGY

A swarm of insects plays an important role in the ecosystem, as it helps with pollination, decomposition, and pest control. However, a swarm of insects can also pose a threat to crops, livestock, and people if it becomes too large or aggressive. A swarm of insects may be attracted to certain substances or conditions that provide them with food or shelter, such as blood, carrion, honey, light, or warmth. A swarm of insects may also be repelled by certain substances or conditions that harm or annoy them, such as smoke, vinegar, citronella, or cold. A swarm of insects has many natural predators and enemies that can reduce its numbers or drive it away, such as birds, bats, frogs, lizards
