5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
Storm giants are massive, temperamental giants that reside at the top of the ordning, the social hierarchy of the giantkind. They are amongst the most physically imposing monsters in the game; they stand over 25 feet tall with a Strength of 29. They have blue or purple skin, dark hair, and eyes that resemble storm clouds. They wear scale mail armor and wield greatswords or rocks as weapons. They also have innate magical abilities that allow them to control the weather, levitate, and hurl lightning bolts .
Storm giants are obsessed with omens and prophecies, which they believe reveal the will of Annam, the god of giants. They interpret various signs and events, such as the flight of birds, the shape of clouds, or the outcome of battles, as indications of their destiny and role in the world. They are often conflicted between their chaotic nature and their sense of duty to their god and their kin.
Storm giants are gentle and reclusive. They are usually tolerant of others, but can be very dangerous when angry. Storm giants resemble well-formed humans of gargantuan proportions. Adult males and females are about 26’ tall and weigh about 15,000 pounds. Storm giants have pale, light green or (rarely) violet skin. Green-skinned storm giants have dark green hair and glittering emerald eyes. Violet-skinned storm giants have deep violet or blue-black hair with silvery gray or purple eyes. Storm giants can live to be 600 years old.
A storm giant’s garb usually is a short, loose tunic belted at the waist, sandals or bare feet, and a headband. They wear a few pieces of simple, but finely crafted jewelry: anklets (favored by bare-footed giants), rings, or circlets being most common.
COMBAT
Storm giants are formidable foes in combat, as they can deal massive damage with their melee attacks or their ranged attacks. They prefer to fight from a distance, using their lightning strike ability to electrocute their enemies or their spellcasting ability to manipulate the environment. They can also throw rocks with great accuracy and force, or use their greatswords to slash through their opponents. Storm giants are resistant to cold damage and immune to lightning and thunder damage .
Storm giants are not easily provoked into combat, as they prefer to avoid unnecessary violence and focus on their omens. However, they will not hesitate to defend themselves or their allies if threatened or challenged. They are also loyal to their ordning and will fight against any enemies of the giantkind, especially dragons, whom they despise. Storm giants are proud and honorable warriors, who respect strength and courage in their foes.
When two or more storm giants are encountered in lair they will be a mated couple and their children.
There is a 20% chance that an adult storm giant is also a priest (70%) or wizard (30%).
Storm giant lairs are always protected by guards. Land or aerial lairs have 1d2 rocs (70%), which also serve a mounts, or 1d4 griffons (30%). Underwater lairs have 2d4 sea lions.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
Storm giants live in isolated locations that are close to the sea or the sky, such as coastal cliffs, mountaintops, or floating islands. They build impressive castles or palaces that reflect their wealth and power. They often have servants or allies from other races, such as cloud giants, aarakocra, or merfolk. Storm giants value art and culture, and enjoy music, poetry, and painting.
Storm giants are usually solitary or live in small family groups, as they do not trust other storm giants easily. They communicate with each other through dreams or omens, rather than direct contact. They rarely interact with other races, except for trading or diplomacy. Storm giants are benevolent and generous to those who show them respect and kindness, but they can also be wrathful and vengeful to those who offend them or harm their interests.
Storm giants live off the land in the immediate vicinity of their lairs. If the natural harvest is not enough to sustain them, they create and carefully till large areas of gardens, fields, and vineyards. They do not keep animals for food, preferring to hunt.
ECOLOGY
Storm giants are apex predators that feed on large animals such as whales, elephants, or dragons. They also consume a lot of seafood and fresh fruits. Storm giants have a lifespan of about 600 years, and reach maturity at around 100 years. They mate for life and produce one or two offspring every century. Storm giants care deeply for their children and teach them about their heritage and traditions.
Storm giants have a significant impact on the environment, as they can alter the weather and the climate with their magic. They can create storms, floods, droughts, or earthquakes to suit their needs or whims. They can also affect the balance of power in the world, as they can influence the fate of nations and empires with their omens and prophecies. Storm giants are revered and feared by many creatures, who see them as agents of destiny or divine wrath.
