Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

Quaggoth

A quaggoth is a beast-like humanoid that dwells in the dark depths of the Underdark. They are savage and territorial, hunting for prey and defending their lairs from intruders. They are often enslaved by other races, such as drow or illithids, who use them as guards or soldiers.

Description

A quaggoth resembles a large, shaggy bear with a vaguely humanoid shape. They have long, white fur that covers their entire bodies, sometimes painted with patterns or symbols to blend in with their surroundings. They have dark, black eyes, pointed ears, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. They walk on their hind legs, but often use their arms to pull themselves across the ground like a gorilla. They are hunched over, and stand between 6 and 7 feet tall, weighing about 250 pounds. They wear no clothing.

Quaggoths speak a halting form of Undercommon, and can grasp only simple concepts. More intelligent quaggoths may also speak a few words of Duergar, Drow, or Common. They have no written language, and rely on oral traditions and symbols to pass on their history and beliefs. They worship primal forces, such as fire, earth, and darkness, and fear the light and the surface world. They hate elves and dwarves, especially the drow, who often enslave them and treat them cruelly.

Combat

Quaggoths are fearless and aggressive fighters, who attack any creature they perceive as a threat or a potential meal. They prefer to ambush their prey, using their natural climbing abilities and darkvision to gain an advantage. They fight with either their claws or crude weapons, such as spears or clubs, depending on the clan. They are prone to flying into berserk rages, ignoring any pain or injury and trying to tear their foes to pieces. They are resistant to poison, and can shrug off most effects that would harm their minds.

Habitat / Society

Quaggoths are nomadic hunters, who roam the Underdark in search of food and territory. They live in clans of up to 20 members, led by a jald, or chief, and guided by a thonot, or shaman. The thonot is often a psionic, who uses their mental powers to communicate with the clan and influence their enemies. Quaggoths claim a central cave as their lair, where they store their treasure and guard their young. They periodically change their territory, to avoid exhausting their resources or attracting unwanted attention.

Quaggoths are not very intelligent, and have a primitive culture and language. They have few rituals, which include the daily preparation for hunting, coming of age, and death (a brief whistling to send the spirit away before the rest of the quaggoths eat the body). They can mate at any time of the year, usually in the winter, and produce one or two offspring. The young are born blind and helpless, and depend on their mother for the first few months of their life. They mature quickly, and reach adulthood by the age of three. Quaggoths have a short lifespan, rarely living past the age of 15. They die of disease, injury, or old age, or are killed by their enemies or rivals.

The origin of quaggoths is unknown. Some sages claim that they were once a semi-civilized race which dominated much of the Underdark through conquest and ritual sacrifice, until the drow, duergar, and other races broke their power. Others speculate they had some sort of civilization on the surface and were driven underground; this theory is supported by the quaggoths’ hatred for surface-dwelling dwarves and elves.

Ecology

Quaggoths are carnivorous, and will eat any meat they can find or kill. They prefer fresh meat, but will scavenge or cannibalize if necessary. They have a fast metabolism, and need to eat frequently to sustain their strength and energy. They are also territorial, and will mark their hunting grounds with urine, feces, or blood. They will fight fiercely to defend their territory from other predators or invaders, especially other quaggoth clans.

Quaggoths are mammals, and reproduce sexually. They have no courtship or mating rituals. Births are usually singular, but twins are not uncommon. Quaggoths produce a few artifacts, mostly crudely carved stone items. A few seem to be talented at making necklaces with wooden, bone, or stone beads.

Quaggoths fear no creature. Though they are dangerous hunters, they are just as often prey for other predators of the Underdark. Quaggoths can be trained as servants and guards if captured early.
