5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A pseudodragon is a small dragon-like creature that resembles a miniature version of its larger cousins. It has a long tail with a stinger at the end, a pair of leathery wings, and a pair of horns on its head. Its scales are usually brownish-red, but it can change its color to blend in with its surroundings. A pseudodragon has keen senses, especially sight, hearing, and smell. It can communicate telepathically with any creature that can understand a language, but it cannot speak itself. A pseudodragon is intelligent and curious, but also shy and cautious. It prefers to avoid conflict and hide from danger, but it will defend itself and its friends if necessary. A pseudodragon is loyal and friendly to those who earn its trust, and it may bond with a compatible creature as a familiar or a companion .
COMBAT
A pseudodragon is not a formidable combatant, but it can use its speed and stealth to evade or surprise its enemies. It can bite with its sharp teeth or sting with its tail, which injects a venom that can cause drowsiness or unconsciousness . A pseudodragon also has some resistance to magic, and it can sense the presence of other creatures within 60 feet of it . A pseudodragon will usually flee from a stronger foe, unless it is protecting its bonded partner or its lair.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A pseudodragon lives in the quiet places of the world, such as forests, hills, mountains, or urban areas. It makes its home in a hidden nest, often in a tree hollow or a rooftop. It collects shiny or interesting objects that catch its eye, such as coins, gems, jewelry, or books. A pseudodragon is solitary by nature, but it may occasionally interact with other pseudodragons or similar creatures, such as sprites or pixies. A pseudodragon may also form a bond with a creature that shares its alignment and interests, such as a wizard, a sorcerer, or a bard. This bond is based on mutual respect and affection, and it grants both parties some benefits, such as enhanced senses, shared emotions, and improved communication .
The personality of a pseudodragon has been described by some as catlike. A pseudodragon is willing to serve, provided that it is well-fed, groomed, and receives lots of attention. At times a pseudodragon seems arrogant, demanding, and less than willing to help. In order to gain its full cooperation, the companion must pamper the pseudodragon and make it feel as though it were the most important thing in his life. If the pseudodragon is mistreated or insulted it will leave, or worse, play pranks when least expected. Pseudodragons particularly dislike cruelty and will not serve cruel masters.
ECOLOGY
A pseudodragon is an omnivorous creature that feeds on insects, rodents, fruits, nuts, and honey. It hunts by using its keen senses and camouflage abilities to locate and catch its prey. It may also scavenge food from human settlements or accept offerings from friendly creatures. A pseudodragon does not need much food to sustain itself, but it enjoys treats and delicacies from time to time.
A pseudodragon reproduces by laying eggs in clutches of four to six which hatch in mid-summer; females raise the young by themselves. A pseudodragon reaches maturity in about five years, and can live up to 50 years. A pseudodragon hibernates in winter; the young leave the nest in spring to mate.
A pseudodragon plays an important role in the balance of nature, as it helps control the population of pests and vermin. It also serves as a companion and ally to those who appreciate its beauty and wisdom.
