Innate Spellcasting. The oni’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 13). The oni can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: darkness, invisibility
- 1/day: charm person, cone of cold, gaseous form, sleep
Magic Weapons. The oni’s weapon attacks are magical.
Regeneration. The oni regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point.
ACTIONS
- Multiattack. The Oni makes two attacks, either with its claws or its glaive.
- Claw (Oni Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) slashing damage.
- Glaive (Large Form). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d10 + 4) slashing damage.
- Glaive (Small or Medium Form). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) slashing damage.
- Change Shape. The oni magically polymorphs into a Small or Medium humanoid, into a Large giant, or back into its true form. Other than its size, its statistics are the same in each form. The only equipment that is transformed is its glaive, which shrinks so that it can be wielded in humanoid form. If the oni dies, it reverts to its true form, and its glaive reverts to its normal size.
5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
Oni are fearsome creatures that resemble ogres or trolls, but with horns, fangs, and claws. They have dark skin that ranges from blue to green to red, and often wear chain mail or other armor. They wield large glaives or other weapons that they can shrink or enlarge with their magic. Oni have the ability to change their shape into any humanoid or giant form, which they use to deceive and manipulate others. They also have innate spellcasting abilities, such as creating darkness, turning invisible, charming people, or unleashing cones of cold. Oni are evil and cunning, and enjoy causing pain and suffering to others.
COMBAT
Oni are formidable opponents in combat, as they combine brute strength, magic, and deception. They often start a fight by casting darkness or invisibility on themselves, and then surprise their enemies with a sudden attack. They use their glaive to inflict heavy damage, or their claws if they are in a smaller form. They can also cast charm person or sleep on weaker foes, or cone of cold on groups of enemies. Oni are not afraid to retreat if they are outnumbered or outmatched, using their gaseous form or shapechanging abilities to escape. They can also regenerate some of their wounds, unless they are harmed by acid or fire.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
Oni are native to the eastern lands of Kara-Tur, where they are known as spirit folk. They are often found in mountainous regions, forests, or urban areas. They usually live alone or in small groups, as they are distrustful and competitive with each other. They sometimes ally themselves with other evil creatures, such as ogres, giants, or dragons, but only for their own benefit. Oni are also known to infiltrate human or humanoid societies, using their shapechanging abilities to assume the roles of nobles, merchants, priests, or other influential people. They use their positions to spread corruption, sow discord, and indulge in their sadistic desires.
ECOLOGY
Oni are carnivorous and prefer to eat human flesh, especially that of children. They often kidnap their victims and torture them before devouring them. Oni have a long lifespan and can live for centuries. They reproduce by mating with other oni or with humanoids, usually by force. The offspring of such unions are always oni, and inherit the traits of both parents. Oni have few natural enemies, as they are feared and hated by most creatures. They are sometimes hunted by adventurers, monks, samurai, or other heroes who seek to rid the world of their evil.
