5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A Nonaton is a type of modron, a race of mechanical beings that inhabit the plane of Mechanus. A Nonaton is one of the highest-ranking modrons, second only to the Decaton in authority. A Nonaton resembles a large metal cylinder with nine arms, each ending in a different weapon or tool. A Nonaton has a single eye that can rotate around its body, giving it a 360-degree vision. A Nonaton is responsible for overseeing the operations of 81 Decatons, each commanding 81 Novatons, and so on. A Nonaton is loyal to the will of Primus, the godlike ruler of Mechanus and the modrons.
There are at least 81 nonaton posts identified in modron society, and there may be more. These cylindrical modrons act as commissars and chief inspectors of the modron universe. Nine nonatons carry the orders of the octons, 64 regulate the actions of the decatons on the 64 wheels of the realm, and eight monitor the loyalties of the decatons of the army. Each nonaton has ten decaton lieutenants, who in turn have five pentadrones to serve them.
COMBAT
A Nonaton is a formidable opponent in combat, capable of using its nine arms to attack multiple enemies at once. A Nonaton can also cast spells as a 9th-level wizard, using its eye as a focus. A Nonaton prefers to use spells that enhance its defenses, such as shield, mirror image, or blur, or that hinder its foes, such as hold person, slow, or web. A Nonaton rarely engages in melee combat, preferring to keep its distance and use its ranged weapons, such as crossbows, darts, or slings. A Nonaton can also summon other modrons to aid it in battle, such as monodrones, duodrones, or tridrones.
Nonatons usually head investigations of rogue modron units and handle small-party invasions from other planes. In the latter case, they first attempt to detect the invaders’ intentions, then act accordingly.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A Nonaton lives in Mechanus, the plane of absolute order and law. Mechanus is composed of infinite gears of various sizes and shapes, each rotating with perfect precision and harmony. The modrons are the native inhabitants of Mechanus, and they follow a strict hierarchy based on their shape and number. A Nonaton is one of the rarest and most powerful modrons, and it commands a vast army of lower-ranking modrons. A Nonaton reports directly to the Decaton, who in turn reports to Primus. A Nonaton has no personality or emotions, and it only cares about fulfilling its assigned tasks and maintaining order in Mechanus.
ECOLOGY
A Nonaton is not a living creature, but a construct made of metal and magic. A Nonaton does not need to eat, drink, sleep, or breathe, but it does require regular maintenance and repairs. A Nonaton can be damaged by physical attacks or by spells that affect metal or constructs, such as heat metal, shatter, or disintegrate. A Nonaton can be healed by spells that affect constructs, such as mending, make whole, or regenerate. A Nonaton can also be reprogrammed or controlled by spells that affect machines or minds, such as command, dominate person, or geas. A Nonaton has no natural enemies or allies, except for other modrons and Primus.
