5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
Mud Mephit
A mud mephit is a small elemental creature of earth and water that resembles a winged humanoid made of wet clay. They are slow, unctuous, and whiny, constantly complaining to anyone who will listen and begging for attention and treasure. They are often found in swamps, marshes, or other places where earth and water mix.
Description
A mud mephit is about 4 feet tall and weighs about 60 pounds. Its skin is brown and slimy, covered with patches of dirt and gravel. Its eyes are dull and sunken, and its mouth is full of sharp teeth. Its wings are leathery and ragged, barely able to lift its body off the ground. A mud mephit speaks Aquan and Terran, the languages of water and earth elementals.
A mud mephit is a lazy and cowardly creature that prefers to avoid combat unless it has a clear advantage. It often serves as a minion or a messenger for more powerful beings, such as genies or hags, who can offer it protection and rewards. A mud mephit is greedy and selfish, always looking for ways to acquire more wealth and status. It has a keen sense of smell and can detect the presence of precious metals or gems nearby.
Combat
A mud mephit is not a formidable opponent in a fight, but it can use its innate abilities to hinder and annoy its enemies. It has two main attacks: a fist that deals bludgeoning damage, and a breath weapon that spews sticky mud onto a nearby target. The mud can restrain a medium or smaller creature for up to a minute, unless it breaks free with a successful Dexterity saving throw.
A mud mephit also has two defensive abilities: a death burst and a false appearance. When a mud mephit dies, it explodes in a burst of sticky mud that can restrain any medium or smaller creatures within 5 feet of it. When a mud mephit remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary mound of mud.
A mud mephit usually tries to avoid direct confrontation by flying or swimming away from danger. It may also try to lure its foes into traps or ambushes set by its allies or masters. A mud mephit is loyal only to itself, and will readily betray or abandon its companions if it sees an opportunity to save itself or gain an advantage.
Habitat / Society
A mud mephit lives in wet and muddy environments where it can blend in with its surroundings. It may inhabit natural swamps, marshes, bogs, or lakes, or artificial places such as sewers, dungeons, or ruins. A mud mephit may also be found near sources of elemental earth and water, such as portals, rifts, or volcanoes.
A mud mephit is usually solitary or part of a small group of its own kind. It may also associate with other types of mephits or similar creatures, such as oozes, slimes, or puddings. A mud mephit rarely forms lasting bonds with anyone, except for those who can offer it something valuable in return. A mud mephit may serve as a minion for a more powerful creature, such as a genie or a hag, who can provide it with shelter, food, treasure, or protection. A mud mephit may also act as a messenger or a spy for its master, using its stealth and false appearance to infiltrate enemy territory.
A mud mephit has a simple and selfish personality. It is lazy, greedy, whiny, and cowardly. It spends most of its time sleeping, eating, hoarding treasure, or complaining about its lot in life. It has little interest in anything beyond its own survival and comfort. It dislikes hard work, danger, cold weather, dryness, fire, and loud noises. It likes warmth, moisture, mud baths, shiny objects, flattery, and gossip.
Ecology
A mud mephit is an elemental creature that does not need to eat or drink to survive. However, it enjoys consuming organic matter that it finds in its habitat, such as plants, animals, fungi, or corpses. It also likes to collect shiny or valuable objects that it stashes in hidden places.
A mud mephit does not reproduce naturally. It can only be created by magical means, such as summoning spells or rituals involving elemental earth and water. A mud mephit may also be born from the union of an earth elemental and a water elemental.
A mud mephit has few natural predators or enemies. It may be hunted by creatures that seek its treasure or flesh, such as dragons, trolls, otyughs, or carrion crawlers. It may also be attacked by creatures that oppose its element or alignment, such as fire elementals, fey creatures, or paladins.
A mud mephit has little impact on its environment, except for making it more muddy and dirty. It may also cause minor damage to structures or objects that it comes into contact with, such as walls, doors, or furniture. A mud mephit may also spread diseases or parasites that it carries in its body or mud.
