5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

Kobolds are small, scaly, reptilian humanoids that resemble miniature dragons. They have reddish-brown skin, yellow eyes, and a long, thin tail. Kobolds are often seen wearing leather armor and wielding simple weapons such as spears, slings, and light picks. Kobolds are cowardly and cunning creatures that prefer to avoid direct confrontation with stronger foes. They rely on their darkvision, trap-making skills, and pack tactics to survive in the harsh underground environments they inhabit. Kobolds are also sadistic and vicious, taking pleasure in torturing and killing their enemies. Kobolds have a fondness for wearing raggedy garb of red and orange, which makes them stand out in the dark. Their language sounds like small dogs yapping, which adds to their ridicule by other races.

COMBAT

Kobolds are not formidable fighters on their own, but they can pose a serious threat when they work together as a group. Kobolds use their superior numbers and coordination to flank, surround, and overwhelm their enemies. They also make use of their environment, setting up traps, ambushes, and hit-and-run attacks to gain an advantage. Kobolds are adept at using their agility and stealth to evade detection and escape from danger. However, kobolds have a major weakness: sunlight. Kobolds are extremely sensitive to bright light, which impairs their vision and accuracy. Kobolds will avoid fighting in sunlight whenever possible, and will seek cover or retreat if exposed to it.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

Kobolds live in dark and damp places underground and in overgrown forests. They can be found in almost any climate. As kobolds are good miners, any area with potential for mining is fair game for settlement. They either dig their own warrens or occupy abandoned complexes left by other races. Kobolds are very territorial and defensive of their lairs, which they fill with traps and alarms to ward off intruders. Kobolds are also very loyal to their tribe and their leader, who is usually the strongest or the smartest among them. Their society is tribal but can be further broken up into war bands based on specific clans. As many as 10 families can be part of a clan, and each clan usually is responsible for controlling the area in a 10 mile radius from the lair. Kobolds worship dragons as their divine ancestors, and will often seek to serve or emulate them. Some kobolds even develop draconic features or abilities, such as scales, wings, or breath weapons.

ECOLOGY

Kobolds are omnivorous scavengers that can survive on almost anything they can find or steal. They have a fast metabolism and a short lifespan, which makes them reproduce quickly and often. Kobolds are constantly expanding their domains and resources, which often brings them into conflict with other races. Kobolds are considered pests and vermin by most civilized societies, who view them as nuisances at best and enemies at worst. Kobolds are also hated and hunted by many natural predators, such as goblins, orcs, trolls, and giants. Kobolds especially dislike gnomes and attack them on sight. Gnomes are never eaten or taken prisoner by kobolds. Perhaps kobolds are so cruel because they are easy prey for larger humanoids and hungry monsters. They have many enemies, and even the dwarves have had to admit that the numerous kobold-goblin wars have kept the number of goblins down to a safe level. Kobolds can live up to 135 years.
