5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

Janni

Janni are the weakest of all genies, but also the most versatile and adaptable. They are composed of all four elements: air, earth, fire, and water, and can travel between the Material Plane and the Elemental Planes with ease. They are often mistaken for humans or half-elves, but have a mystical aura that sets them apart.

DESCRIPTION

Janni resemble powerfully built humans or half-elves, with skin color ranging from golden sand to dark earth. Their eye color varies greatly, but always has a supernatural intensity. They stand between six and seven feet tall, and have attractive features. They dress in loose and comfortable clothing, often adorned with jewelry and ornaments.

Janni are intelligent and friendly, but also proud and independent. They value freedom and enlightenment above all else, and dislike being bound by rules or obligations. They are usually neutral in alignment, but some may lean toward good or evil depending on their personal experiences.

Janni have a strong connection to all four elements, and can manipulate them to some extent. They can fly, change their size, create illusions, and speak with animals. They are also immune to the effects of heat and sand, and resistant to fire.

Janni are immune to sleep and charm effects, and can see in the dark. They can also become invisible at will, making them hard to detect or target. They can communicate telepathically with other genies within 100 feet, and can summon other janni or elementals to aid them in a fight.

COMBAT

Janni prefer to avoid combat if possible, but will defend themselves and their allies if threatened. They use their elemental abilities to gain an advantage over their foes, such as flying out of reach, creating obscuring mists, or hurling fireballs. They also wield scimitars or bows with skill, and may use magic items or potions to enhance their capabilities.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

Janni are natives of the Material Plane, but can travel to any of the Elemental Planes as well. They prefer warm climates and desert terrains, where they can blend in with the local human populations. They live in nomadic tribes or small settlements, often near oases or ruins. They are hospitable to strangers who respect their customs and boundaries, but wary of those who trespass or threaten their way of life.

Janni have a close relationship with the djinn, who they regard as their elder cousins and allies. They often call upon them for help or advice in times of need. They tolerate the efreet and the dao, but do not trust them or share their values. They treat the marid as royalty, and offer them gifts and tribute whenever they encounter them.

Janni have a complex social structure based on age, gender, rank, and achievement. The eldest male janni is usually the leader of the tribe or settlement, and is responsible for making decisions and settling disputes. The eldest female janni is the keeper of lore and tradition, and is revered for her wisdom and insight. The younger janni are expected to obey their elders and learn from them, but also to prove themselves worthy of respect and honor by accomplishing feats of bravery or skill. Janni value individuality and creativity, but also loyalty and cooperation.

Janni favor forlorn deserts and hidden oases, where they have both privacy and safety. A tribe is made up of 1d20 + 10 individuals and is ruled by a sheik and one or two viziers.

Exceptionally powerful sheiks are given the title of amir, and in time of need they gather and command large forces of jann (and sometimes allied humans). Many jann tribes are nomadic, traveling with flocks of camels, goats, or sheep from oasis to oasis.

These itinerant jann appear human in every respect, and are often mistaken for them unless they are attacked. Jann are strong and courageous, and they do not take kindly to insult or injury The territory of a jann tribe can extend hundreds of miles in any direction.

While travelling, male jann live in large, colorful tents with their wives and married male children, and their families. Married daughters move away to live with their new husbands. When a family eventually grows large enough that it can no longer reside comfortably in the tent, a new tent is built, and a son takes his wife and family with him to this new dwelling.

At permanent oases, the jann live not only in tents, but also in elegantly styled structures built from materials brought from any of the elemental planes.

Janni are able to dwell in air, earth, fire, or water environments for up to 48 hours. This includes the elemental planes, to which any janni can travel, even taking up to six individuals along if those others hold hands in a circle with the janni.

Failure to return to the Prime Material plane within 48 hours inflicts 1 point of damage per additional hour on the jann, until the jann dies or return to the Prime Material plane.

Travel to another elemental plane is possible, without damage, providing at least two days are spent on the Prime Material plane immediately prior to the travel.

ECOLOGY

Janni are omnivorous creatures that can eat almost anything that is edible for humans. They need water to survive, but can go for long periods without food if necessary. They have a lifespan of about 300 years, and reach maturity at around 50 years. They reproduce sexually like humans do, but have a low fertility rate. Janni children are rare and precious, and are raised with great care and affection by their parents and community.

Janni have a minimal impact on their environment, as they do not build permanent structures or exploit natural resources excessively. They respect the balance of nature and the spirits of the land, and try to coexist peacefully with other creatures that share their habitat. They may trade with nearby human settlements for goods or services that they cannot produce themselves, such as metalwork or magic items. Janni are curious about other cultures and civilizations, but also wary of their dangers and corruption.

Janni are suspicious of humans, dislike demihumans, and detest humanoids. Janni accept djinn, but shun dao, efreet, and marids. They sometimes befriend humans or work with them for a desired reward, like potent magical items.

One ethic the jann share with other nomads is the cultural demand for treating guests with honor and respect. Innocent visitors (including humans) are treated hospitably during their stay but some day might be expected to return the favor.
