5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A half-dragon is a hybrid creature that results from the mating of a dragon and another creature, such as a human, an orc, a giant, or a beast. A half-dragon inherits some of the physical traits and abilities of its dragon parent, such as scales, wings, claws, a breath weapon, and resistance to certain types of damage. However, a half-dragon also retains some of the features and characteristics of its non-dragon parent, such as size, shape, alignment, and personality. A half-dragon’s appearance can vary widely depending on the type and color of its dragon parent. For example, a half-red dragon might have red scales, horns, and fiery eyes, while a half-blue dragon might have blue scales, a crest, and lightning-shaped markings. A half-dragon’s breath weapon also depends on its dragon parent’s ancestry. A half-dragon can breathe fire, acid, poison, lightning, or cold, depending on the type of dragon it is related to.
A half-dragon can only be born from the union of a male metallic dragon – gold, silver, or bronze – and a female human or demihuman. Demihumans include elves, half-elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, kender, and similar humanlike races (including drow). A female dragon cannot be impregnated by a male human or demihuman. Furthermore, only those dragons with the innate power to shapechange themselves into human or demihuman shape can interbreed with the latter while in the latter’s form. Interbreeding is not possible while a dragon is using a normal polymorph self spell. Some dragons that might have the power to create half-dragon offspring simply have no interest in doing so, and actively avoid it. These are most commonly dragons who have little or no interest in humanity or have strong prejudices against humans, demihumans, or mammals in general, greatly preferring the company of other dragons alone.
Few physical features definitively mark a newborn babe as a half-dragon, though there are some telltale signs of the dragon parent; usually eyes or hair the color of gold, silver, or bronze. As they reach adulthood half-dragons grow tall and lean, no matter what demihuman blood mixes with their draconic heritage. During adolescence draconic abilities begin to manifest. These abilities become stronger and more pronounced over time and with use. Physical changes accompany the appearance of these abilities. A mature half-dragon appears as a very tall, very lithe humanoid with certain elflike features: a slender frame, lean muscles, long limbs, pointed ears. The skin has the look and texture of demihuman flesh, though with the pigmentation of the dragon parent. Hair is thick and luxurious, of a deeper and richer shade than the flesh color. A half-dragon’s fingers are long and thin, with nails like talons. The true mark of dragon heritage is seen in the face, which has a distinctive reptilian appearance: snakelike eyes, elongated features, and the barest hint of horns protruding above the temples. Half-dragons have no wings, tails, or scales. No matter their demihuman heritage, all half-dragons mature in this way.
COMBAT
A half-dragon is a formidable opponent in combat, as it combines the natural weapons and abilities of a dragon with the skills and tactics of its non-dragon parent. A half-dragon can use its breath weapon to inflict massive damage on multiple enemies at once, or to create an area of effect that hinders or harms its foes. A half-dragon can also use its claws, teeth, tail, and wings to attack in melee range, or to grapple or knock down its opponents. A half-dragon is immune to sleep and paralysis effects, and has resistance to one type of damage based on its dragon parent’s ancestry. A half-dragon also has enhanced vision that allows it to see in low-light and dark conditions.
Some half-dragons are trained in martial arts or weapons by their non-dragon parent or their allies. For example, a half-red dragon veteran might wield a longsword and a shield, while a half-blue dragon gladiator might use a trident and a net. These half-dragons can use their weapons to complement their natural attacks, or to exploit the weaknesses of their enemies.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A half-dragon’s habitat and society depend largely on its non-dragon parent and the circumstances of its birth. Some half-dragons are raised by their dragon parent in their lair or territory, where they learn the ways of their draconic heritage. These half-dragons often adopt the alignment and goals of their dragon parent, and may serve as their agents or allies in the world. Other half-dragons are raised by their non-dragon parent or their community, where they learn the culture and customs of their other ancestry. These half-dragons may have a more diverse or flexible alignment and outlook, and may seek to balance their dual nature in their lives.
Some half-dragons are rejected or persecuted by both sides of their lineage, as they are seen as abominations or threats by dragons and non-dragons alike. These half-dragons may live as outcasts or wanderers, hiding their true nature from others or embracing it as a source of pride or defiance. Some half-dragons may join forces with other hybrids or misfits, such as werecreatures or tieflings, forming bonds of friendship or loyalty based on their shared experiences.
Half-dragons tend to be loners. Most are raised by their demihuman parents, growing up in that culture. When the half-dragon’s true nature becomes noticeable, the community often banishes the mixed being or makes life so unbearable that the half-dragon leaves. Half-dragons tend to become explorers and adventurers, traveling the world as they seek a place to call home. Half-dragons can belong to any class, and they set up lairs in remote places between the realms of dragons and demihumans.
ECOLOGY
A half-dragon’s ecology is influenced by both its dragon and non-dragon parentage. A half-dragon may have a diet similar to that of its dragon parent, such as meat, gems, or metals, or it may have a more varied or adaptable diet based on its non-dragon parent’s preferences. A half-dragon may also have an affinity for certain types of environments or terrains based on its dragon parent’s ancestry. For example, a half-brass dragon may favor deserts or plains, while a half-black dragon may prefer swamps or marshes.
A half-dragon’s life span is typically twice that of its non-dragon parent’s race. For example, a half-dragon human might live for more than 150 years. A half-dragon may also inherit some of the reproductive traits of its dragon parent, such as being able to mate with any creature that is within one size category of itself. A half-dragon may produce offspring that are either full-blooded dragons or other types of half-dragons.
