5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A gnoll pack lord is the alpha of a gnoll pack, ruling by might and cunning. A pack lord earns the best of a gnoll pack’s spoils, food, valuable trinkets, and magic items. It ornaments its body with brutal piercings and grotesque trophies, dyeing its fur with demonic sigils, hoping Yeenoghu will make it invulnerable. A gnoll pack lord is a medium humanoid with a hyena-like appearance, darkvision, and a chaotic evil alignment.
COMBAT
A gnoll pack lord is a fierce and ruthless combatant, wielding a glaive or a longbow as its preferred weapons. It can make two attacks per round, and use its Incite Rampage ability to inspire another gnoll with the Rampage trait to make an extra melee attack as a reaction. The Rampage trait allows a gnoll to move and bite as a bonus action when it reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack on its turn. A gnoll pack lord is also adept at coordinating its pack, using its superior senses and intelligence to direct the gnolls’ attacks and retreats.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A gnoll pack lord lives in a nomadic band of gnolls that roams the lands, hunting and raiding for food and loot. A gnoll pack is loyal to its pack lord, following its commands and sharing its spoils. A pack lord maintains its authority by being the strongest and most cunning gnoll in the pack, often challenging and killing any rivals or dissenters. A pack lord also seeks to please Yeenoghu, the Demon Prince of Gnolls, by spreading carnage and chaos in his name. A pack lord may lead its pack to join forces with other gnolls or demonic allies, or to attack other creatures that worship or oppose Yeenoghu.
ECOLOGY
A gnoll pack lord is a carnivorous scavenger that feeds on any flesh it can find, preferring fresh kills over rotting corpses. A gnoll pack lord has no regard for the natural balance of the environment, destroying and consuming anything in its path. A gnoll pack lord is also a potential host for Yeenoghu’s influence, as the Demon Prince can manifest his power through the pack lord’s body or mind. This can grant the pack lord supernatural abilities or visions, or drive it into a frenzy of bloodlust and madness.
