ACTIONS

  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) poison damage. The target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking the poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, the target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour, even after regaining hit points, and is paralyzed while poisoned in this way.
  • Web (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 30/60 ft., one creature. The target is restrained by webbing. As an action, the restrained target can make a DC 12 Strength check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 10; hp 5; vulnerability to fire damage; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).

DESCRIPTION

A giant spider is a monstrous arachnid, about the size of a horse, with eight legs and a body divided into two parts: the cephalothorax and the abdomen. The creature has sharp fangs, black eyes, and a spinneret to create webs. Its body is covered with coarse hair, usually black or brown, but sometimes with other colors or patterns. A giant spider can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

COMBAT

A giant spider is a cunning and stealthy predator, using its webbing to snare its prey or to create traps and lairs. It can sense the location of any creature in contact with its web. It attacks with its bite, which can inject a potent venom that causes paralysis and severe pain. A giant spider can also shoot sticky strands of webbing from its abdomen, which can restrain a creature at a distance. A giant spider is vulnerable to fire, which can destroy its webbing and harm its body.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A giant spider is most commonly found underground, making its lair on ceilings or in dark, web-filled crevices. Such lairs are often festooned with web cocoons holding past victims. A giant spider is usually solitary, but sometimes forms small colonies with other spiders of its kind. A giant spider is not intelligent, but it can communicate with simple sounds and gestures. A giant spider is unaligned, meaning it has no moral or ethical code.

ECOLOGY

A giant spider is a carnivore, feeding on any creature it can catch and kill. It prefers warm-blooded prey, such as mammals and birds, but it will also eat reptiles, insects, and even other spiders. A giant spider can digest almost anything, leaving behind only bones and metal objects. A giant spider reproduces by laying eggs in a silk sac, which it guards until they hatch. A giant spider can live for several years, depending on the availability of food and the presence of predators.

Giant Spiders can be used as mounts or pulling animals for vehicles.
