DESCRIPTION

The Giant Scorpion is a fearsome beast that resembles a huge scorpion, with a hard chitinous exoskeleton, eight legs, two large pincers, and a long tail ending in a venomous stinger. It can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds. Its coloration varies from dark brown to black, sometimes with reddish or yellowish markings, but some specimens have a green carapace and yellowish green legs and pincers. It has no eyes, but it can sense its surroundings with its blindsight, which allows it to detect vibrations and heat sources within 60 feet. It has a bitter smell associated with its venom, and it makes an unnerving scrabbling sound as it travels across dungeon floors.

COMBAT

The Giant Scorpion is a formidable opponent in combat, using its speed and agility to strike at its prey. It can make three attacks in one round: two with its claws and one with its sting. Its claws are powerful enough to crush bones and metal, and they can also grapple and restrain its targets. Its sting is even more deadly, injecting a potent poison that can cause excruciating pain, paralysis, or death. The Giant Scorpion is not very intelligent, but it is cunning and ruthless, often attacking from ambush or using its natural camouflage to blend in with its environment.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

The Giant Scorpion is a solitary creature that prefers warm and arid climates, such as deserts, savannas, or badlands. It can also be found in caves, ruins, or dungeons, where it hunts for food and shelter. It is territorial and aggressive, defending its lair from any intruders. It feeds on any living creature that it can catch, including humans and other humanoids. It does not have any natural allies or enemies, except for other Giant Scorpions that might compete for the same resources. Each lair may (20%) have 5d4 scorpion eggs. Any treasure found comes from the bodies of human or demihuman victims that have been dragged here to be consumed. Armor is rarely found intact, since the scorpion will surely have used its pincers to cut up its prey.

ECOLOGY

The Giant Scorpion is an apex predator that plays an important role in the ecosystem. It helps control the population of smaller creatures that might otherwise overpopulate and damage the environment. It also provides food for scavengers and decomposers that feed on its carcass after it dies. The Giant Scorpion’s exoskeleton is highly valued by some cultures for its durability and beauty, and its venom is sought after by alchemists and poisoners for its potency and variety of effects. These bizarre insects contribute to the ecosystem by feeding on other giant versions of insects such as spiders and ants. They themselves are prey for purple worms and other huge, subterranean creatures.

Giant Scorpions can be used as mounts or pulling animals for vehicles.
