DESCRIPTION
A giant frog is a massive amphibian that resembles its more common relatives in everything but size. Its skin is usually green, brown, or gray, with dark spots or stripes, and secretes a slimy substance that protects it from drying out and from some diseases. It has a large mouth with sharp teeth, and powerful legs that allow it to leap great distances. A giant frog’s eyes are located on the top of its head, giving it a wide field of vision. A giant frog can breathe both air and water, and can survive in a variety of environments.
A giant frog can range from 2 to 6 feet in length and weigh between 50 and 250 pounds (a 2-foot frog weighs 50 pounds, adding 50 pounds for each additional foot of length). A giant frog cannot jump backward or directly to either side, but can leap up to 30 feet straight up or 20 feet horizontally, with or without a running start.
COMBAT
A giant frog is a fierce predator that will attack anything that moves within its reach. It uses its long, sticky tongue to snatch prey and drag it into its mouth, where it bites with its strong jaws. A giant frog can swallow a small or smaller creature whole, digesting it slowly in its stomach. A swallowed creature is blinded, restrained, and takes acid damage from the frog’s digestive juices. A giant frog can only swallow one creature at a time, and if it dies, the swallowed creature can escape from its corpse.
A giant frog is not very intelligent, but it has keen senses of smell and hearing. It can detect vibrations in the ground and water, and can see well in the dark. A giant frog is stealthy and can hide among vegetation or underwater. It surprises opponents easily when in its natural habitat. A giant frog’s tongue is equal in length to three times the frog’s length.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A giant frog can be found in any temperate or tropical region that has water sources, such as swamps, marshes, lakes, rivers, or ponds. A giant frog prefers to live near shallow water, where it can hunt for fish, insects, rodents, birds, reptiles, or even larger animals. A giant frog is solitary and territorial, and will defend its hunting grounds from other predators or intruders.
A giant frog lives in groups but does not have any real social structure. It reproduces by laying eggs in the water, which hatch into tadpoles after a few weeks. The tadpoles feed on algae and small aquatic creatures until they grow legs and lungs and become adult frogs. A giant frog can live up to 15 years in the wild.
ECOLOGY
A giant frog is an important part of the ecosystem, as it helps control the population of smaller animals and provides food for larger ones. A giant frog has few natural enemies, but it may be hunted by crocodiles, alligators, snakes, large cats, bears, or humans. Some cultures use the skin of a giant frog to make leather or glue, or extract its poison for medicinal or weapon purposes.
A giant frog is not very picky about its diet, and will eat almost anything that fits in its mouth. It can go for days without food if necessary, but it will also gorge itself if food is plentiful. A giant frog does not need to drink water, as it absorbs moisture through its skin. A giant frog is active mostly at night, when it hunts for prey or mates. During the day, it rests in a shady spot or underwater.
