Amphibious. The froghemoth can breathe air and water.
Shock Susceptibility. If the froghemoth takes lightning damage, it suffers several effects until the end of its next turn: its speed is halved, it takes a -2 penality to AC and Dexterity saving throws, it can’t use reactions or Multiattack, and on its turn, it can use either an action or a bonus action, not both.
ACTIONS
- Multiattack. The froghemoth makes two attacks with its tentacles. It can also use its tongue or bite.
- Multiattack (suggested). The froghemoth makes four attacks with its tentacles or one attack with its bite or one attack with its tongue.
- Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (3d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16) if it is a Huge or smaller creature. Until the grapple ends, the froghemoth can’t use this tentacle on another target. The froghemoth has four tentacles.
- Tentacle (suggested). Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16) if it is a Huge or smaller creature. Until the grapple ends, the froghemoth can’t use this tentacle on another target. The froghemoth has four tentacles. In addition, the target takes 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of the froghemoth’s turns as the tentacle squeezes it. While the target is grappled by a tentacle, the froghemoth has advantage on bite attacks against it.
- Bite. Melee Weaopn Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d10 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is swallowed if it is a Medium or smaller creature. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the froghemoth, and takes 10 (3d6) acid damage at the start of each of the froghemoth’s turns. The froghemoth’s gullet can hold up to two creatures at a time. If the froghemoth takes 20 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the froghemoth must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, each of which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the froghemoth. If the froghemoth dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse using 10 feet of movement, exiting prone.
- Bite. Melee Weaopn Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 33 (5d10 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is swallowed if it is a Medium or smaller creature.
- Tongue. The froghemoth targets one Medium or smaller creature that it can see within 20 feet of it. The target must make a DC 18 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is pulled into an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the froghemoth, and the froghemoth can make a bite attack against it as a bonus action.
5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
Froghemoth
The froghemoth is a massive amphibious predator that resembles a giant frog with four tentacles and three eyes. It is feared by many creatures that dwell in swamps and jungles, as it can devour almost anything in its path. Some bullywugs worship the froghemoth as a god, offering it food and protection in exchange for its favor.
Description
The froghemoth is about 18 feet long (or tall, when standing) and 10 feet wide, weighing 5 tons. It has a yellow belly and yellowish-green undersides of the legs, shading to light green on the sides, and then to mottled green on the tentacles and back. The nostrils are on short stalks, and the three eyes are greenish-tinged amber with vertical, bright green edged with orange pupils. The eyes are located on retractable appendages that can extend up to 10 feet from the body. The froghemoth has four 15-foot-long tentacles that can grasp and crush its prey, as well as a long tongue that can snatch creatures from a distance. The froghemoth also has a powerful bite that can sever limbs or even swallow whole creatures.
The froghemoth can easily camouflage itself in its natural habitat, as it looks like a plant growth when submerged in water or hidden behind vegetation. It only exposes its eye and nostril stalks at water level, making it hard to spot by unsuspecting prey or predators. The froghemoth can also retract its eyes into its body if threatened, protecting them from damage.
Combat
The froghemoth is a fierce and aggressive hunter that will attack anything that moves or makes noise within its range. It prefers to ambush its prey from underwater or behind vegetation, using its darkvision to see in dim light. It can also sense vibrations through the ground or water, making it hard to escape its notice. The froghemoth uses its tentacles to grapple and squeeze its prey, while also biting them with advantage. It can also use its tongue to pull creatures closer to its mouth, or to trip them and knock them prone. The froghemoth is resistant to fire and lightning damage, as it has a thick and moist skin that protects it from heat and electricity. The froghemoth is amphibious, meaning it can breathe both air and water, but it prefers to stay near water sources where it can submerge itself and hide from potential threats.
Habitat / Society
The froghemoth lives in warm and wet environments, such as swamps, marshes, jungles, or tropical islands. It is a solitary creature that claims a large territory as its own, driving away or killing any intruders. The only exception is when it mates with another froghemoth of the opposite sex, which happens once every few years. The female lays a clutch of about 20 eggs in a shallow pool of water, and then leaves them to hatch on their own. The eggs are about 1 foot in diameter, and hatch after 3 months. The young froghemoths, called tadhemoths, look fish-like, with four pectoral fins and two tails that will eventually become tentacles and legs respectively. They are fully aquatic and rely on gills to breathe. They grow rapidly, reaching full maturity after 12 months. During this time, they develop their tentacles, legs, eyes, tongue, and lungs. They also become more aggressive and territorial, eventually leaving their birthplace to find their own hunting grounds.
Some bullywug tribes worship the froghemoth as a god, believing it to be an avatar of Kubazan, one of the Nine Trickster Gods of Chult. According to Omuan legends, Kubazan was originally a toad who challenged the primordial Ubtao to a wrestling match. Ubtao gave Kubazan tentacles to make him stronger, creating the first froghemoth. The bullywugs try to lure the froghemoth to their den, offering it food and protection in exchange for its blessing. They can communicate with the froghemoth at a basic level, using gestures and sounds. However, the froghemoth usually kills and eats a number of bullywugs before they can successfully convey their intentions. The froghemoth does not care much about the bullywugs’ worship, but tolerates them as long as they provide enough tribute and do not annoy it too much.
Ecology
The froghemoth is an apex predator that feeds on almost any creature that crosses its path. It prefers large and meaty prey, such as crocodiles, dinosaurs, giant snakes, or even humans. It can swallow smaller creatures whole, or tear apart larger ones with its bite and tentacles. It can also digest bones and metal objects with its acidic stomach juices. The froghemoth does not need to eat very often, as it can store enough energy in its fat reserves for several weeks or even months. However, it will not pass up an opportunity to hunt if it senses potential prey nearby. The froghemoth has few natural enemies, as most creatures avoid or flee from it. However, it may occasionally encounter other powerful predators, such as dragons, hydras, or rocs, and fight them for territory or food. The froghemoth also faces threats from adventurers, explorers, or hunters who seek to kill it for its hide, meat, or trophies.
