Amorphous. The oblex can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
Aversion to Fire. If the oblex takes fire damage, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the end of its next turn.
Innate Spellcasting. The oblex’s innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 18). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: charm person (as 5th-level spell), detect thoughts, hold person
- 3/day each: confusion, dimension door, dominate person, fear, hallucinatory terrain, hold monster, hypnotic pattern, telekinesis
Sulfurous Impersonation. As a bonus action, the oblex can extrude a piece of itself that assumes the appearance of one Medium or smaller creature whose memories it has stolen. This simulacrum appears, feels, and sounds exactly like the creature it impersonates, though it smells faintly of sulfur. The oblex can impersonate 2d6 + 1 different creatures, each one tethered to its body by a strand of slime that can extend up to 120 feet away. For all practical purposes, the simulacrum is the oblex, meaning the oblex occupies its space and the simulacrum’s space simultaneously. The slimy tether is immune to damage, but it is severed if there is no opening at least 1 inch wide between the oblex’s main body and the simulacrum. The simulacrum disappears if the tether is severed.
ACTIONS
- Multiattack. The elder oblex makes two pseudopod attacks and uses Eat Memories.
- Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) psychic damage.
- Eat Memories. The oblex targets one creature it can see within 5 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take 44 (8d10) psychic damage and become memory drained until it finishes a short or long rest or until it benefits from the greater restoration or heal spell. Constructs, oozes, plants, and undead succeed on the save automatically. While memory drained, the target must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from any ability check or attack roll it makes. Each time the target is memory drained beyond the first, the die size increases by one: the d4 becomes a d6, the d6 becomes a d8, and so on until the die becomes a d20, at which point the target becomes unconscious for 1 hour. The effect then ends. When an oblex causes a target to become memory drained, the oblex learns all the languages the target knows and gains all its proficiencies, except any saving throw proficiencies.
5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
An elder oblex is a huge ooze that was created by mind flayers as a result of their experiments on oozes. An elder oblex has a gelatinous, translucent body that can change shape and color. It has multiple pseudopods that it uses to attack and feed on its prey. An elder oblex can also create realistic simulacra of the creatures whose memories it has consumed. These simulacra are connected to the elder oblex by a thin strand of ooze, and can speak and act as the original creatures. An elder oblex is highly intelligent and can communicate telepathically with any creature within 120 feet of it.
COMBAT
An elder oblex is a dangerous foe that can use its abilities to deceive, manipulate, and overwhelm its enemies. It can move through narrow spaces without difficulty, and is vulnerable to fire damage. In combat, an elder oblex can make two pseudopod attacks and use its eat memories ability to drain the intelligence and memories of a creature within 5 feet of it. A creature that loses all its memories becomes an empty husk under the elder oblex’s control. An elder oblex can also create up to four simulacra of the creatures whose memories it has eaten. These simulacra can act independently of the elder oblex, but are tethered to it by a strand of ooze. The elder oblex can see and hear through the simulacra, and can use them to lure, distract, or ambush its foes. The simulacra disappear if the tether is severed or if the elder oblex dies.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
An elder oblex is usually found in the Underdark, where it serves as a tool or a pet for the mind flayers. The mind flayers use the elder oblex to gather information and memories from their captives, or to infiltrate and spy on their enemies. An elder oblex can also act on its own, seeking out intelligent creatures to feed on their memories and personalities. An elder oblex is solitary and does not associate with other oozes or creatures, except for its simulacra. An elder oblex is loyal to its mind flayer creators, but may also harbor a secret desire for freedom or revenge.
ECOLOGY
An elder oblex is a living repository of memories and knowledge that it has accumulated over time. It can recall any memory or information that it has consumed, making it a valuable source of intelligence for the mind flayers. An elder oblex does not need to sleep, but it does need to feed on the memories of intelligent creatures to sustain itself. An elder oblex can also reproduce by splitting off a smaller portion of itself, creating an adult oblex or an oblex spawn. These offspring inherit some of the memories and personalities of the elder oblex, but are not under its control.
