5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A Duergar Hammerer is a terrifying construct that resembles a large metal box with two arms, one ending in a claw and the other in a hammer. The most horrifying feature of this machine is that it contains a living duergar inside it, who is trapped and tortured by the device’s mechanism. The duergar’s pain is converted into energy that powers the hammerer, making it a relentless and ruthless weapon of war. The hammerer is typically used by the duergar to dig tunnels, clear obstacles, and repel invaders in their underground domains.

COMBAT

A Duergar Hammerer is a formidable opponent in combat, as it can deal heavy damage with its claw and hammer attacks. It also has a natural armor that makes it resistant to most physical attacks. The hammerer is especially effective against objects and structures, as it can deal double damage to them. However, the hammerer also has a weakness: the duergar inside it. Once per turn, an attacker can target the duergar instead of the hammerer, with disadvantage on the attack roll. If the attack hits, it deals extra damage to the hammerer, and the hammerer can respond by using its multiattack with its reaction. This represents the duergar’s agony and rage being unleashed by the machine.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A Duergar Hammerer is not a natural creature, but a product of the duergar’s twisted engineering and cruelty. The duergar are a subrace of dwarves that were enslaved by mind flayers long ago, and developed a hatred for all other races and even their own kin. They live in the Underdark, a vast network of caverns and tunnels beneath the surface world, where they plot to overthrow the dwarven pantheon and conquer their enemies. The duergar use hammerers as tools of destruction and domination, as well as punishment for those who fail or disobey them. The duergar trapped inside a hammerer are usually criminals, traitors, or weaklings who are sentenced to a life of torment and servitude.

ECOLOGY

A Duergar Hammerer has no natural place in the ecology of the Underdark, as it is an artificial construct that consumes no resources and produces no waste. The only thing that sustains it is the pain of the duergar inside it, which is constantly inflicted by the machine’s spikes, wires, and gears. The hammerer has no mind or personality of its own, but follows the commands of its duergar masters without question or hesitation. The hammerer has no purpose or goal other than to serve as a weapon and a symbol of the duergar’s malice and power.
