Avoidance. If the displacer beast is subjected to an effect that allows it to make a saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if it fails.

Displacement. The displacer beast projects a magical illusion that makes it appear to be standing near its actual location, causing attack rolls against it to have disadvantage. If it is hit by an attack, this trait is disrupted until the end of its next turn. This trait is also disrupted while the displacer beast is incapacitated or has a speed of 0.

Rake (suggested). If both front claws hit, the displacer beast may rake with its four rear claws dealing 6 (1d4 + 4) slashing damage each as a bonus action. No hit roll required.

ACTIONS

5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.

It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it

DESCRIPTION

A displacer beast is a monstrous creature that resembles a large, six-legged cat with a pair of long, barbed tentacles sprouting from its shoulders. Its fur is usually dark blue or black, and its eyes glow with a sinister green light, even after death. A displacer beast can create a magical illusion that makes it appear to be several feet away from its actual location, making it hard to hit with attacks. This ability is called displacement, and it is the result of the displacer beast’s origin in the Feywild, a plane of magic and wonder.

COMBAT

A displacer beast is a fierce and cunning predator that prefers to hunt at night. It uses its displacement ability to confuse and evade its enemies, while striking with its powerful claws and tentacles. A displacer beast’s tentacles can inflict terrible wounds that bleed profusely, and can also grab and drag prey closer to its jaws. A displacer beast is not afraid to fight multiple opponents at once, and will often target the weakest or most isolated enemy first. A displacer beast can be temporarily stunned by a loud noise or a bright flash of light, which disrupts its displacement illusion.

A displacer beast tries to catch its victims by surprise using its stealth, and then attacks using its tentacles to weaken the closest target. A target trying to get in close combat with the displacer beast is subject to an attack of opportunity from the tentacles. The displacer beast can make up to two attacks of opportunity in a round of combat. If, after the first round of combat none of the targets is down, the displacer beast will withdraw only to come back later and catch the targets again by surprise. The displacer beast is intelligent enough to understand that a disarmed opponent is a vulnerable target. The creature may decide to withdraw with the weapons and return later to finish the victim. The displacer beast avoids entering close combat with teeth and claws, doing so only if cornered or with no way to escape.

HABITAT / SOCIETY

A displacer beast can be found in various terrains, such as hills, mountains, jungles, and woods. It prefers areas with plenty of cover and prey, and avoids open spaces and deserts. A displacer beast is usually solitary, but sometimes forms small packs of two to six members. These packs are led by a larger and smarter variant of the displacer beast called a pack lord, which can communicate with other displacer beasts using a simple language of growls and hisses. A pack lord can also command other creatures that serve the Unseelie Court, such as blink dogs, quicklings, and redcaps. A displacer beast pack is loyal to its leader, but will quickly turn on each other if the pack lord is killed or weakened.

Displacer beasts are carnivores. Unless they are raising young, they usually run in packs, carving a savage swath of destruction as they go. They hate all life, and will sometimes kill purely for pleasure. Fierce and vicious as they are, however, displacer beasts never fight among themselves. The pack is a well-run and highly efficient killing machine. When encountered in packs, displacer beasts are more than a match for many large creatures and have been known to make a meal of orcs, goblins, and bands of men. Any creature entering their territory is viewed as potential prey.

ECOLOGY

A displacer beast is a carnivorous creature that feeds on any living thing it can catch and kill. It has a special appetite for fey creatures, such as unicorns, pegasi, and sprites, which it hunts for sport as well as food. A displacer beast can also sense magic and will attack spellcasters or magical items with curiosity and greed. A displacer beast has few natural enemies, except for blink dogs, which are its sworn rivals. Blink dogs are fey hounds that can teleport short distances, and they often clash with displacer beasts over territory and prey. A displacer beast will always attack a blink dog on sight, regardless of the odds or the situation.

Displacer beasts have little to fear from other large predators, save perhaps trolls or giants. Some wizards and alchemists value their hides for use in certain magical preparations, and will offer generous rewards for them. The eyes of a displacer beast are a highly prized, if uncommon, good luck charms among thieves who believe that they will protect the bearer from detection.
