5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A dire troll is a monstrous creature that has grown to an enormous size by devouring other trolls and grafting their flesh onto its own body. A dire troll has multiple arms, eyes, mouths, and other appendages that give it a grotesque and horrifying appearance. A dire troll’s skin is thick and scaly, ranging from green to gray in color. A dire troll’s eyes are red or yellow, and its teeth are jagged and stained with blood. A dire troll stands about 20 feet tall and weighs over 4,000 pounds.
COMBAT
A dire troll is a fearsome opponent that relies on its brute strength, ferocity, and regeneration to overwhelm its enemies. A dire troll can attack with up to four of its arms, each wielding a weapon or a claw. A dire troll can also bite with one of its mouths, or use its breath weapon to spew a stream of acid at a target. A dire troll’s breath weapon can dissolve metal and flesh alike, making it a deadly weapon against armored foes.
A dire troll’s most remarkable ability is its regeneration, which allows it to heal from almost any wound. A dire troll can reattach severed limbs or even grow new ones if it consumes enough troll flesh. A dire troll can also incorporate the flesh of other trolls into its own body, increasing its size and power. A dire troll can only be killed by fire or acid, which prevent its regeneration from working. Even then, a dire troll can survive if it has enough spare body parts to replace the damaged ones.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A dire troll is a solitary and territorial creature that lives in remote and dangerous areas, such as mountains, swamps, or forests. A dire troll rarely interacts with other creatures, except to hunt them for food or to defend its lair. A dire troll’s lair is usually a cave or a ruin filled with bones, treasure, and trophies from its kills. A dire troll hoards anything shiny or valuable that it finds, but has no use for most of it.
A dire troll has no allies or friends among other creatures, not even other trolls. A dire troll views other trolls as rivals or prey, and will attack them on sight. A dire troll will only tolerate the presence of other trolls if they are subservient to it or offer it tribute in the form of flesh. A dire troll will sometimes lead a band of lesser trolls as a warlord or a tyrant, but will not hesitate to devour them if they disobey or disappoint it.
ECOLOGY
A dire troll is a carnivore that feeds on any living creature that it can catch and kill. A dire troll prefers to eat other trolls, as they provide the most nourishment and allow it to grow larger and stronger. A dire troll will also eat humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, animals, and even plants if it is hungry enough. A dire troll can consume up to 10% of its body weight in a single meal.
A dire troll has a negative impact on the environment around it, as it destroys everything in its path and leaves behind a trail of corpses and acid. A dire troll’s presence can cause the local flora and fauna to wither and die, creating a barren and desolate area. A dire troll also attracts scavengers and predators that feed on its leftovers or try to challenge it for its territory.
A dire troll has no natural predators, except for dragons, giants, or other powerful creatures that can match its strength and resilience. A dire troll will avoid these creatures if possible, but will fight them if provoked or threatened. A dire troll will also fight against adventurers, soldiers, hunters, or anyone else who tries to invade its lair or harm it.
