5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
Chitines are small, spider-like humanoids that were originally created by the drow as servants of Lolth, the Demon Queen of Spiders. They have four arms, each with an extra joint and claws, and faceted eyes and mandibles on their faces. Their skin is covered with chitin, a hard substance that protects them from harm. Chitines are agile and can climb most surfaces with ease. They have a strong connection to Lolth and her web, and can sense the presence of other creatures in contact with the same web .
Chitines wear clothing made from dried and processed silk. Bits of colored rocks, carved bones, and such are frequently woven throughout. They always keep their hands and feet uncovered. They carry their tools in pouches woven into their clothing. Chitines speak Undercommon, the language of the drow, and sometimes know a bit of other subterranean languages.
COMBAT
Chitines are fierce and loyal warriors of Lolth, and will fight to the death to defend her and her interests. They usually attack in groups, using their daggers, javelins, webs, and traps to overwhelm their enemies. Chitines are adept at stealth and ambush, and will often use their web sense to locate and surprise their foes. Chitines have some resistance to magic, especially charms and sleep spells, due to their fey ancestry. They also have a weakness to sunlight, which impairs their vision and accuracy .
Chitines are most fond of traps and ambushes. Frequently they build a normal-looking spider web with a seemingly natural way around it. The web is a false trap and a pit, drop net, or similar trap that is sprung when the route is chosen. They are extremely clever and vicious with their traps.
Their warriors commonly carry javelins and wear the webbing equivalent of studded leather armor. They carry short swords for melee combat. Usually they have weapons in three of their hands and a hardened webbing shield in the fourth.
Because the chitines are able to build with webbing, they may devise all sorts of nasty tricks. By sticking dust and rock chips to a mat of webbing, they can make a very convincing natural stone wall or floor. By means of a secret process, they can harden webbing into a bone-like material.
It is slightly flexible, not sticky, and hard enough to slice or penetrate armor. They can weave such deadly spikes and edges into their traps to cause damage per spike or edge.
Weapons and armor made from hardened webbing works just like normal items made by humans. However, the items deteriorate after several months if not treated with the oil secreted by their skin.
Hardened webbing is susceptible to fire; contact with flame ignites hardened webbing, burning the item away.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
Chitines live in colonies in the Underdark, usually near or under the influence of drow cities. They serve as workers, scouts, spies, and soldiers for the drow, who treat them as disposable tools. Chitines are loyal to Lolth and her chosen ones, but have little regard for other races or creatures. They communicate with each other using a combination of clicks, hisses, and gestures.
Chitines build their dwellings with webbing like humans build with stone or wood. Their cavern villages are located in the center of a maze of trap-laden webbing. The hardened webbing dwellings resemble domed houses, complete with windows and decorative shapes adorning them. These homes can be located on any surface, including the ceiling. Bridges of webbing cross the town, providing easy pathways. Suspended in the center of the cavern is usually a heart-shaped temple devoted to Lolth.
Chitines have a simple culture and religion, based on worshiping Lolth and her web. They believe that they are part of her divine plan, and that they will be rewarded for their service in the afterlife . Chitines are cast-off experiments of the drow. They have increased in numbers over the centuries, and even now plot to overthrow the drow who are Lolth’s favorites. The priestesses of the chitines are rumored to be of a different and more powerful race, more akin to Lolth herself.
ECOLOGY
Chitines are omnivorous, but prefer meat over plants. They hunt and scavenge for food in the Underdark, often competing with other predators or prey. Chitines are also cannibalistic, and will eat their own kind if they are hungry or injured. Chitines reproduce by laying eggs in webs, which hatch into chitine hatchlings after a few weeks. Chitine hatchlings are smaller and weaker than adults, but grow quickly under the care of their parents or colony. Chitines have a short lifespan, rarely living longer than 10 years.
Chitines can spin sticky spider webbing at the rate of one foot per round. The webbing is spun from an orifice in their stomach. Chitines eat anything that moves, sucking the fluids from the victim and leaving the dried remains on the cavern floor underneath their temple. Chitines are hunted by both drow and driders.
