5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
Bullywug
Bullywugs are frog-like humanoids that live in swamps and marshes. They are primitive, savage, and self-destructive, often hunting and killing for sport without regard for the balance of nature. They worship a frog god named Ramenos and communicate with frogs and toads using their own language. They are usually hostile to other races and see themselves as the lords of the swamp.
Description
Bullywugs have smooth and tough skin that ranges from green to yellow to brown to gray. Their skin can change color to match their surroundings, making them hard to spot in swampy terrain. They have big, bulbous eyes, wide mouths, and long tongues that can flick out to catch prey. They stand between 4 and 7 feet tall and weigh between 100 and 300 pounds. They smell like rotting vegetation and swamp water.
Bullywugs wear crude armor made from leather, hide, or plant materials. They wield spears, clubs, nets, or slings as weapons. Some bullywugs have special abilities, such as magic, leadership, or chivalry. These bullywugs are usually respected and feared by their kin.
Bullywugs are tribal and hierarchical. They follow the strongest or smartest bullywug as their leader. The leader is usually a bullywug royal, a bullywug with 8 hit points that claims authority over others. The leader is often accompanied by a giant toad or frog as a mount or a pet. The leader demands tribute and obedience from the other bullywugs, and punishes any dissenters with violence or exile.
Bullywugs are territorial and xenophobic. They view other races as intruders or prey in their domain. They will attack anyone who enters their swamp without permission or tribute. They especially hate lizardfolk, who compete with them for resources and territory. They sometimes ally with other swamp creatures, such as hags, trolls, or yuan-ti, but only for mutual benefit or survival.
Bullywugs are covered with smooth, mottled olive green hide that is reasonably tough. More intelligent than frogs, all bullywugs live in organized or semi-organized socially fascist groups, cooperating for the purpose of hunting and survival. They live primarily on fish and any other game, preferring a diet of meat. They are adept hunters and fisherman, and skilled in the use and construction of snares and nets.
Bullywug society is a savage one. Males are the dominant sex, and females exist only to lay eggs. Though females and young make up about one-half of any tribe, they count for little in the social order. The only signs of respect that bullywugs ever bestow are toward their leader and their bizarre frog god. The race is chaotic evil, and totally lacking in any higher emotions or feelings. They can vary in size from smaller than the average human to about seven feet in height. Their faces resemble those of enormous frogs, with wide mouths and large, bulbous eyes; their feet and hands are webbed. Though they wear no clothing, all bullywugs use weapons, armor, and shields if they are available. Bullywugs have their own language and the more intelligent ones can speak a limited form of the common tongue.
Combat
Bullywugs are aggressive and cunning fighters. They use their ability to breathe underwater and their camouflage to ambush their enemies. They also use their leaping ability to surprise or escape their foes. They often fight in groups, using their croaking calls to coordinate their attacks. They prefer to fight in swampy terrain, where they have an advantage over other creatures.
Bullywugs are not very brave or loyal. They will flee or surrender if they are outnumbered or outmatched. They will also betray their allies if they see an opportunity for personal gain. They are greedy and curious, and will often loot the bodies of their enemies or capture them for ransom.
On an individual level, bullywugs lack the greed and powerlust seen in the individuals of other chaotic races, such as orcs. Fighting among members of the same group, for example, is almost nonexistent. Some would say that this is because they lack the intelligence to pick a fight, and not from a lack of spite. The tribes are lead by the dominant male, who kills and eats the previous leader when it is too old to rule. This is one of the few instances when they fight among themselves.
Habitat / Society
Bullywugs live in villages or camps in swamps, marshes, bogs, or wetlands. They build crude huts or tents from sticks, mud, reeds, or animal skins. They also use natural features such as caves, hollow trees, or sunken ruins as shelters. They decorate their dwellings with bones, skulls, feathers, shells, or other trophies from their hunts.
All bullywugs favor dank, dark places to live, since they must keep their skin moist. Most bullywugs live in the open and maintain only loose territorial boundaries. Ordinary bullywugs do not deal with incursions into their territory very efficiently, but they kill and eat interlopers if they can. They hate their large relatives (advanced bullywugs, see below) with a passion, and make war upon them at every opportunity. Bullywugs prize treasure, though it benefits them little. They value coins and jewels, and occasionally a magical item can be found amongst their hoard.
A sample tribe of 100 bullywugs would have the following distribution:
- 1 bullywug chieftain
- 5 bullywug subchieftains
- 10 bullywugs advanced
- a 2nd-level bullywug shaman
- 84 ordinary bullywugs
Ecology
Bullywugs are carnivorous and omnivorous. They eat anything they can catch or scavenge, such as fish, frogs, insects, birds, rodents, reptiles, or even humans. They also eat plants, fungi, berries, nuts, or roots that grow in the swamp. They have no regard for the balance of nature and will hunt and kill more than they need.
Bullywugs reproduce by laying eggs in pools of water. The eggs hatch into tadpoles that grow into adult bullywugs over several months. Bullywugs have no concept of family or parenthood and do not care for their offspring. The young bullywugs must fend for themselves and survive the harsh conditions of the swamp.
Bullywugs worship Ramenos, a frog god that represents fertility, gluttony, and chaos. Ramenos is said to live in a hidden temple in the deepest part of the swamp. Bullywugs believe that Ramenos will reward them with food, treasure, and power if they please him with sacrifices and offerings. Bullywugs also fear Ramenos’s wrath if they anger him with disobedience or failure.
Bullywugs tend to disrupt ecosystems, rather than fill a niche in them. They do not have the intelligence to harvest their food supplies sensibly and will fish and hunt in an area until its natural resources are depleted, and then move on to a new territory. They hate men, and will attack them on sight, but fortunately prefer to dwell in isolated regions far from human beings.
Bullywugs are a menace to the natural world and a threat to civilization. They destroy the environment with their reckless hunting and pollute the water with their waste. They raid nearby settlements for food, loot, or slaves. They spread diseases and parasites with their bites and scratches. They are enemies of anyone who values life and order.
Bullywug is employed as material component to empower the following spells:
