5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
A blink dog is a mysterious, intelligent canine creature that resembles a large dog with yellow-brown fur and large ears. It has the ability to blink, a supernatural teleportation ability that allows it to disappear and reappear in a different location. A blink dog can communicate telepathically with other blink dogs, and understands Sylvan, the language of the fey, but cannot speak it. A blink dog is loyal, brave, and friendly, and often allies itself with good-aligned creatures.
A blink dog is stockier and more muscular than other wild dogs. It has keen hearing and smell, and has advantage on perception checks that rely on those senses. A blink dog is also proficient in stealth, and can surprise its enemies with its sudden appearance.
COMBAT
A blink dog uses its blinking ability to aid its attacks and to avoid harm. It can teleport up to 40 feet to an unoccupied space it can see, and can make a bite attack before or after teleporting. A blink dog attack is well organized. They will blink without any obvious pattern, using their powers to position themselves for an attack. Most of the time they are able to attack their targets from the rear with advantage after teleporting provided they did not spend the attack before. A blink dog is not very strong or durable, but relies on its agility and cunning to overcome its foes.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
A blink dog lives in temperate forests, plains, or hills, where it hunts in packs of four to six. A blink dog pack is led by an alpha male, who mates with a single female. The pack is very protective of its territory and its members, and will defend them fiercely from intruders. A blink dog pack may form a bond with a benevolent humanoid community, such as elves or halflings, and offer them protection and assistance in exchange for food and friendship. A blink dog pack may also befriend a good-aligned adventurer or hero, and accompany them on their quests.
A blink dog communicates in a complex language of barks, yaps, whines, and growls. They inhabit open plains and avoid human haunts. A lair will contain 3d4 pups 50% of the time. These puppies can be trained and are worth between 1,000 to 2,000 gold pieces.
ECOLOGY
A blink dog is a fey creature, and as such, has a connection to the natural world and the plane of Faerie. A blink dog is omnivorous, but prefers meat over plants. A blink dog can interbreed with other canine creatures, such as wolves or dogs, producing offspring that inherit some of its traits. A blink dog is revered by some cultures as a symbol of good luck and loyalty, and feared by others as a harbinger of mischief and chaos. A blink dog may also be summoned by powerful magic users or fey lords for various purposes.
