ACTIONS
- Multiattack. The eye of the deep makes three attacks: two with its claws and one with its bite.
- Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) slashing damage.
- Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.
- Eye Rays. The eye of the deep has two eyestalks that can each shoot an eye ray at a target within 60 feet of it. The eye of the deep can use its Eye Rays trait on its turn as a bonus action. Each eye ray is a ranged spell attack with a +4 bonus to hit. On a hit, the target must make a saving throw against the effect of the eye ray, as shown in the Eye Rays table. The DC for the saving throw is 12.
- Hold Monster. The eye of the deep shoots a ray of psychic energy from one of its eyestalks at a creature it can see within 60 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. This ray has no effect on undead. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the ray’s effect ends on the target.
- Hold Person. The eye of the deep shoots a ray of psychic energy from one of its eyestalks at a humanoid it can see within 60 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the ray’s effect ends on the target.
5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
The beholder eye of the deep, also known as a seaholder, is a water-dwelling relative of the beholder, a fearsome aberration that dominates the Underdark with its eye rays. The eye of the deep has a spherical body covered with reddish lobster-like chitin, two antennae with eyes on their ends, and two arms ending in lobster-like claws. It also has a large central eye that emits a cone of blinding light, and a wide mouth full of sharp teeth.
COMBAT
The eye of the deep is a cunning and deceptive creature that uses its eye rays and illusions to lure and trap its prey. It can create and manipulate realistic three-dimensional images by combining the effects of its two eyestalks, which can individually cast hold person and hold monster spells. It can also stun and blind its enemies with its illuminating gaze, a bright flash of light that emanates from its central eye. The eye of the deep is not afraid to use its claws and bite to inflict physical damage, and it can fly and swim with ease. The eye of the deep has a 360-degree vision and a high perception, making it hard to surprise or ambush.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
The eye of the deep lives in the cold and dark depths of the ocean, usually in underwater caves or sunken ruins. It is a solitary and territorial creature that avoids contact with other eyes of the deep, unless it is for mating or fighting. The eye of the deep is amphibious and can breathe air and water, but it prefers to stay submerged. The eye of the deep speaks Common, Beholder, and Aquan, and sometimes forms alliances with other aquatic creatures, such as sahuagin, merfolk, or aboleths, for mutual benefit or entertainment. The eye of the deep is usually lawful evil in alignment, and follows the same philosophy of the beholder, believing itself to be the superior being in the world.
ECOLOGY
The eye of the deep is an omnivorous creature that feeds on fish, seaweed, and any other edible matter it can find. It is also known to prey on shipwrecks and their survivors, using its illusions to lure them in. The eye of the deep has a long lifespan, and can live for centuries. It reproduces by laying eggs, which hatch into small eyes of the deep that grow rapidly. The eye of the deep has few natural predators, but it is sometimes hunted by adventurers, pirates, or other beholders. The eye of the deep is considered a rare and valuable creature, and its body parts can be used for various purposes, such as crafting magic items, potions, or weapons.
