5th Edition Advanced Mode
Limiting the power of a character and making the overall difficulty of the game harder, does not reduce the creativity, indeed it does quite the opposite.
The Game Master has the option to use any and all of the instances proposed in this guide, or just some of them according to their preference.
It is the lack of something that move and motivate characters, not the abundance of it
DESCRIPTION
Azers are elemental beings that resemble dwarves with brass-colored skin and fiery hair and beards. They are native to the Elemental Plane of Fire, where they live in fortresses made of metal and stone. They are master crafters and miners, and often serve as mercenaries or slaves for fire giants and titans. Azers are fiercely loyal to their own kind, and have a long-standing enmity with the efreet, who rule the City of Brass.
Azers wear only kilts or apron-like garments of beaten brass, copper, or bronze. They rarely venture to the Prime Material Plane, except under special circumstances.
COMBAT
Azers are skilled warriors who wield metal weapons that burn with intense heat. They prefer to fight in close quarters, where they can use their heated bodies and weapons to inflict fire damage on their enemies. They are immune to fire and poison, but vulnerable to cold. They can also communicate with other fire creatures using the Ignan language.
Azers defend themselves and their towers with powerful, bellows-like air projectors and special containers used to pour elemental water on attackers.
HABITAT / SOCIETY
Azers live in communal societies where the state is more important than the individual. They are ruled by noble families who wield absolute power over their subjects. Their outposts and cities are built on the volcanic regions of the Elemental Plane of Fire, where they grow strange trees with metallic bark and leaves. They often trade with other planar travelers, especially those who offer them gems, which they covet. Azers are loyal to their allies, but ruthless to their enemies, especially the efreet.
Azers are part of an extremely regimented society where every individual has his or her place. The azer civilization in general is heavily stratified, with law taking precedence over individual freedoms and even an individual’s life.
Azer are unfriendly and taciturn, and they lack compassion. They capture and interrogate intruders; particularly dangerous or violent prisoners are slain. They are greedy, particularly for gems that are a clear purple or red (rubies, amethysts, garnets, etc.). Once given, the word of an azer is a solid bond.
ECOLOGY
Azers are omnivorous creatures who can eat both plants and animals, but prefer spicy and hot foods. They do not need to sleep, but they do rest for a few hours each day. They have a lifespan of about 200 years, and reach maturity at 25. They reproduce sexually, and give birth to live young. Azer hair is a valuable material for crafting magic items, especially those related to fire. Azers worship various deities of fire, metal, and craftsmanship, such as Kossuth, Moradin, or Laduguer.
It is not known just what if anything azers eat. On their home plane, their only enemies are other intelligent fire dwelling creatures, and even then this enmity is not related to relative position on the food chain. The greatest of their enemies are the efreet, who sometimes fight wars of conquest against the azers, taking their territories and making slaves of them.
