In the cursed landscapes of the ruined domains, a Giant Ant Nest encounter is not merely an animal lair; it is an active ecological disaster. Excavated from the sunken ruins of the Anhurak civilization, these sprawling underground colonies mirror the rigid, authoritarian structures of the fallen fiefdoms. The nest operates as a terrifyingly efficient, single organism that methodically strips the surrounding desert of all organic matter and lost magical artifacts.
Hunting Grounds
A mature nest controls a massive expanse of territory, typically extending outward in a radius of 1 Hex (assuming the standard 6-mile hex scale commonly used in Old-School Essentials wilderness exploration). Within this zone, the ants are the apex scavengers, and their foraging trails crisscross the landscape. If a party travels through a hex controlled by a Giant Ant Nest, 90% of all random encounters within this radius will be with Giant Ant foraging or patrol columns.
Total Population
The absolute will of the nest is maintained by a staggering number of specialized insects, divided into a strict caste system:
- Giant Ant Workers: The backbone of the colony. A typical nest contains between 400 to 4,000 (4d10 × 100) active workers at any given time, constantly foraging or expanding the tunnels.
- Giant Ant Warriors: The relentless defenders of the hive. A nest typically maintains a ratio of one warrior for every ten workers, resulting in 50 to 300 (1d6 × 50) warriors stationed near the Queen or patrolling the main arteries.
- Giant Ant Queen: A single, massive, immobile reproductive engine that acts as the absolute center of the colony’s society.
Structure & Layout
A nest is a marvel of insectoid engineering crossed with ancient architecture. The ants use buried stone walls, forgotten catacombs, and deep Anhurak vaults as the scaffolding for their tunnels, reinforcing the ancient stone with a hardened, glass-like resin created by mixing their acidic saliva with desert sand.
- Entrances & Ventilation: The nest is accessed via 1d4 highly visible crater-funnels on the surface. These entrances are typically formed where the desert has broken through the weak points of buried Anhurak architecture, such as collapsed civic domes, fractured aqueducts, or massive sinkholes that drop directly into ancient, subterranean avenues. Additionally, 2d6 hidden ventilation shafts dot the surrounding area (treat as pit traps if walked over).
- The Upper Galleries: A labyrinth of tight, intersecting tunnels primarily populated by Workers. These passages are designed to confuse intruders and are structurally weakened to collapse easily if heavily bombarded by invaders.
- The Foraging Arteries: Wide, smooth tunnels leading straight to the surface entrances, heavily patrolled by Warriors to ensure the safe transport of food.
- The Royal Vault: The deepest, most secure chamber, almost always occupying an ancient, sealed Anhurak archive or throne room. Here, the Queen rests in absolute darkness, surrounded by her most loyal guards.
Ecology
Within the hunting ground radius, the presence of the nest suppresses almost all other wildlife. The land is entirely scoured of vegetation and carcasses. While normal food chains have collapsed, the nest sustains itself by consuming vast amounts of whatever organic matter blows into their territory, while also adapting to process the latent magical residue found in the ancient ruins. Workers often mistakenly mine raw gold, silver, or even small relics, bringing them back to the Queen’s chamber where they are mixed into the structural resin of the deepest hive walls.
